Probably a dumb carseat question..

What do you do when you put the carseat in the car? Leave the handle up (if there's toys on there so LO can see them) or do you put the handle down?

Re: Probably a dumb carseat question..

  • I put it down, I think you are supposed to put it down. If there was an accident the seat is supposed to basically create a shell over the baby if it flipped towards the seat. The bar up would prevent this.

*****all of this is however bump.com knowledge that I'm passing on, I've never actually read it anywhere. It might not be true but it does make sense.

As a L&D/Postpartum nurse we have to take car seat safety classes. The handle is ALWAYS supposed to go down. First bc of what PP said but also you don't want that to break in an accident and end up causing harm to baby.

  • I put it down too, but I always see people that leave it up because of the toys on the bar.  I actually think with DD (5+ years ago) I left it up.  But now I always put it down for that exact reason.

  • I had my car seat inspected by the local police department and was told I needed to leave it down.
  • car seat inspector told us to keep it down.

always keep it down. It's a hazard not to.

I never got any of those hangy-down toys anyways... they annoyed me, I figure the outside world is enough stimulation for a little baby.

Read your manual and it will tell you.  Some seats are safety tested and CAN be used with the handle up.  The manual will tell you.

    This.

  • I took a Baby Basics class and they said to always put the handle down.  Just like PP said its an accident concern.  If you are in an accident the car seat won't work properly

My carseat (a euorpean one) is supposed to used with the handle up! Even the sticker on the side shows you NOT to use it with the handle DOWN. Always read your manual!

  • I actually was just going to post this question today, I'm so glad you did. I thought it was supposed to go down, but see so many up that I didn't know. I went to visit my friend today who is on bedrest at the hospital and I asked one of the nurses, but she didn't know.

I know, I always see them up so I thought I was doing something wrong!  Even MH left it up once and I freaked out, he probably thought I was nuts. lol.

  • Ours has it in bold print to leave it down. I do have a hang toy hanging from the clothing hook that Terra can see, though, and she stares at it if she is awake :)
