sequential/quad screening

Me and DH are considering doing the sequential screening but since we have a high deductible insurance we would have to pay for it 100% out of pocket.  So I was hoping to get input from you ladies on why you did/did not do this testing.

Re: sequential/quad screening

  • We chose to not do it with either pregnancy.  The things that they screen for do not run in our family.  Also I dont think our insurance would have covered it.

    This exactly.

  • We did.  I actually wasn't going to do it, but DH actually insisted.  It wouldn't have changed anything if they found something, but he wanted to be prepared if there was something they found.

This is the only reason I want to get it done.  We both talked about it and know that its not going to change anything.  Maybe we will just not do them.

I just wanted to add that we did consider it for this reason, but still chose not to.  I dont know if it is just reading on the different boards but many times I've read of people getting false positives (or however they measure it) and it wasnt worth it for us to worry over something they weren't absolutly sure of.  But again we didnt really look into it so if it is something that would concern you too you might want to look into it farther.  Good Luck :)

  • I had it done with both pregnancies.  With Nathan my quad screen came back with an elevated AFP (NT defect).  It sucked having to worry for so many weeks about something that turned out to be nothing.  On the other hand, I think it would have been worse to go along thinking everything was ok and find out in the delivery room.  Not to mention, I think it's important for the doctors to know so they're prepared to deliver a baby that requires special attention.  One interesting fact- they said when a test shows an elevated AFP, it sometimes means the mother will develop pre-e, which I did.

How close to the New Year is your due date- is there a good chance your baby will be born this year before the deductible resets?  We also have a high deductible plan.  The way I looked at it is we have our yearly deductible we have to meet then everything is covered.  I knew L&D would more than meet that deductible.  So these screens didn't cost us anything extra.

  • p.s. having gone through the false positive, if we ever decide to have a 3rd baby, I'm still planning to have the screening done

My due date is Christmas Eve so I know that the baby will be born this year more than likely and we will have the deductible more than covered.  After that everything is 90% out of pocket.  I guess I will just have to think about it a little more.

  • We didn't do it. I have known a few people who had false positives, and I wouldn't want to put myself through that stress while pregnant. I don't handle stress well. It ultimately wouldn't have changed anything for us, so we declined.

This was the decision we made as well.

  • I am actually having it done right now, I had the scan and 1st set of blood work done yesterday and go back in a few weeks for the second set. I chose to get it done for a few reasons, I work with special needs children, and in doing so, I see a lot of parents go through denial, saying "nothing is wrong with my child," when it is clear their is, and it is very hard to admit their is something wrong with your child. Second, I would like to know in advance b/c their are a lot of emotions/hormones going on the day of delivery when your child is born, and that is just something I would like to know in advance if I could. Also, a friend of mine had a baby, and when she was born she had markers that suggested she may have downs, they had to do blood work on her and it took a week to get it back, they were on pins and needles waiting for a week to hear if their baby was going to have special needs or not....

There is a 4% margin of error... but I will take that for what it's worth.

Hope that helps. Good luck in Making your decision!

    This.

We are going to deliver this year and figure we will reach our deductible one way or another ? might as well do it now rather than later. Plus we have done a few ?optional? things related to this pregnancy but feel that if it?s something that we really want, and can afford within reason, then we want to do it.

We just got our results back a week ago today. Both DH and I wanted to know and our next steps would have been based on our results and the type/severity of the chromosomal defect that was detected. We were open to an amino, which would have taken care of the false results that can come with a screen. Thankfully it didn?t come to that based on our screen results. I know that screens aren?t 100% so we?re not completely ?in the clear? but I do have some peace of mind and we?re going to run with it.

It really is a personal decision and what would you and DH feel most comfortable with? DH and I did stress over the decision for about a week before coming to our decision on the day of the appointment.

Oh, and Beaumont (and I would assume most other hospitals) offers genetic counseling and we decided to do that. We had done a lot of research on our own so they didn?t tell us anything earth shattering but it was nice to talk to professionals about it and be able to ask questions. Our decision was much easier following the counseling.

I?m rambling. Good luck with your decision!

  • If you have the test and they find something, will it influence you on whether or not to continue the pregnancy. If the answer is no, then dont have the test done. That is my opiinion.
