April 2011 Moms

If you have summer plans...

What measures are you taking to keep LO's skin protected from the sun? Being a FTM I'm clueless to a lot of baby care things like this and my mom told me today that sunscreen shouldn't be used on babies under 6mo. I am on the hunt for a cute sunhat for Aubrey (that actually fits). DH and I are planning on taking a day trip to Savannah, GA in mid-June to celebrate our wedding anniversary and I wanted to hit up the beach but now I don't know. DH's family lives in South Florida and we were considering planning a trip down to visit them in August. Plus each summer we love to hang by the pool but the no-sunscreen would make that a no-go. I'm thinking about purchasing one of those pop up tent things people use at tailgates to create instant shade so we could hopefully still do the things we normally do.

What are you ladies doing to be sun-safe with baby?

  • first, love the picture. Second, i heard the same thing about sunscreen. Sooooo a hat, and maybe lightweight clothes that cover his body? I've heard they make special clothing that helps keep the sun away, but i have yet to see any of it.

  • We're going to my parents' house in Texas in June, and we'll all be swimming. I bought LO a rashguard swimsuit like this: https://www.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=520288&cm_mmc=Google_Feed-_-9-_-53-_-MP953

a sunhat and some baby sunglasses. We'll limit her time actually in the sun by bringing out a big umbrella. I would only let her be in direct sunlight for about 15 minutes at a time.

  • All of the above as we live in Texas. Also instead of one of those big pop up tents there us a baby sun cabana that they sell at BBb and bru.

  • re: the link pp's posted, i purchased the neutrogena pure and free sunblock for her.  the bottle says no use for infants under 6 months, but i'm going to check with the pedi at our next appointment.  we have no plans for pools/beaches/vacations, but even just going to the park or being in the yard, i want her to be protected.  i thought about the tent thing, but since she's not really active yet, so to speak, i feel like i'd just be plopping her in there by herself, and then i'd feel bad about it.

  • My undestanding is that you can use a tiny bit f sunscreen on their hands and face if necessary, but I haven't discussed with my pedi yet. I will be getting SPF clothing, a baby cabana, hat and sunglasses. We spend a lot of time boating but there is a shade so we will sit under that as well.

I just always used a sunhat with C and kept his legs covered with babylegs if they were exposed.  I'll do the same with E.  I'm considering one of those little sun shade things you are talking about too for when C is playing in the back yard and E is a bit more mobile.

I'd also throw out there for those who nurse (not sure how it works with FF) - offer the breast more if you are outside and it's hot so that baby stays hydrated.

I was told not to put any product (soap, lotions, etc) on LO's hands by my pedi and the discharge nurses because they put their hands in their mouths.

Yeah I'm not exactly sure how that works. We never put anything on his hands, but this is from the AAP. https://www.aap.org/advocacy/releases/summertips.cfm
