Pregnant after a Loss

So when you run out of "official" doppler gel...then what do you use?

No, I am not THAT obsessed with the doppler that I have used a whole bottle of gel - to the contrary, I only got a little packet with the machine and I have been perpetually stingy with it, and after almost 5 weeks have enough left for tomorrow's check...and that is it.

So what can use safely use with the dopplers?  I'd rather not cough up for more "official" doppler gel, and I need something that comes in a small container (since I am still covertly using the doppler at the office and not at home).

Ideas?  Experiences? Dos and don'ts?

 Thanks for your thoughts.

  • I never used the gel that came with the doppler.....it felt cold and yucky. I use my lotion and just rub it on my tummy when I am done.  It works well for me everytime. I think it actually works better.  Try not to use lotion has drys up too fast.  I have light Johnson&johnson cocoa lotion that I use.

  • I agree with the aloe vera gel-but I recommend specifically Banana Boat brand.  I bought Walmart brand thinking it would be just fine, and I found it to be more static-y.

You can also get more gel online. I was iffy about using lotion and I got three bottles of gel for like 10 bucks.

  • I just bought a big bottle of ultrasound gel on Amazon for $5.99 (plus $5 shipping!)  The way I see it, that's a hell of a lot cheaper than using something like KY Jelly.  I haven't tried lotion or aloe vera gel.

    This

Edit: Oops wrong board. I used to use Aloe Vera gel so my answer still stands. Going back to Pal now.

  • I didn't bring the gel with me on vacation, so the one time I checked I used regular Aveeno lotion and it worked just fine.

My midwife used this last time!

I switch between the gel that came with the Doppler and a water based lotion.  As long as the first ingredient in the lotion is water, it works just fine with my Doppler.  I tried with a non-water based lotion and it did not work well at all and I had a hard time finding the heartbeat.

  • I swear I heard someone say that you can use jelly (like grape). I have not tried it though...that seems sticky.

  • I ran out of gel right before I went to Hawaii and used aloe vera for a week straight. Worked great.

And I need to buy a large tube of gel, the ones I get online are tiny!

  • DH ordered a bottle from Amazon and it was only a few dollars. I've heard aloe vera works well, too.
