Babies: 0 - 3 Months

does anyone else hold LO for most naps?

My DH and I are both home with the kids right now for the next few months, and this is our last baby, so between the two of us we've pretty much been holding DS #2 for all of his naps. I'll put him in the bouncer or swing once in awhile, but he doesn't sleep as long as when he's held (obviously). Is anyone else guilty of this? I know they say you can't teach bad habits this early, but do you think I should start "teaching" him to sleep in his PnP or crib instead, or just enjoy him being this small while I can?

  • IMO...just enjoy him being this little.. it doesn't last nearly long enough :)

  • I'm not going to say you shouldn't enjoy it, because I know what you mean when you talk about this being your last one. When I hold DS2, I get sad knowing that this is the last time I'll have a baby this small.

    But ...

I would never get anything done if I didn't put the baby down for naps at least sometimes. DS1 always wants me to play with him, and I can never do that if I'm always holding the baby. Not to mention get other stuff done around the house.

  • I am guilty of this also. I just started putting her in her crib yesterday for her afternoon nap. I do rock her to sleep and then hold her for 30 mins before putting her in there.
  • I am guilty of this-- but yesterday I started letting him put himself to sleep, and he was totally ready for it-- Since his first nap of yesterday he has put himself to sleep, even at night after feedings, he did great last night!! I think he was totally ready to just put himself to sleep because everytime i would lay him down after falling asleep boom the eyes open. I am so proud of my big boy.

As much as I can without needing a bathroom break or to eat something. She'll only be this little for such a short amount of time.

And my pedi told me sleep habits don't really form for awhile yet, so not to worry about teaching her anything negative at this point in time. You can't spoil a newborn, you know?

  • He's in my arms now. He's mostly held all day. Needless to say, I don't get much done.

  • I hold him pretty much all day long...I'll put him down toward the end of a nap so I can catch a quick shower or to go to the bathroom.

I don't get a whole lot done right now, but manage a few loads of laundry a week.

  • I'm guilty of this.  DD sleeps in my lap or the moby most of the time during the day.  She naps better that way and I get my snuggling in.  For the first two months DH was home so we would take turns holding her and we were still able to get some stuff done.  Now I just put her in the moby if I need to do something.  You can't spoil them this young.  And for us, DD sleeps 6-7 hours straight most nights in her PnP despite being held for naps.

  • Enjoy it!  DS was the same way and he grew out of it at 4 months.  Now I can't bribe him to cuddle with me like that!!

Now b.c I have a toddler, I can't hold LO#2 as much and it kills me!!

  • Nope, I can't and not sure I would if I could. I have 4 dogs, DS1 is 11 years old and needs me too and well I have twins. So holding them all day is impossible. Plus I like keeping them on a schedule. When DS1 was a baby I never got anything done, he just wanted to be held. He would cry bloody murder when I would put him down so I doubt I would hold this one all the time if they where just 1 baby!

I do however agree that they don't last this small for long. These are my last babies and I am sure in a way I will regret not holding them as much. Or I will feel guilty that because they are twins neither one ever gets my undivided attention like DS1 did!

  • Yep and if I need my hands I put him in his sleepy wrap for nap time.

  • I did this at first-but then I couldn't get anything done.  If you know LO is going to nap, maybe try swaddling so that LO stays snug and warm.  But if you are able to hold LO while napping, enjoy it!  I wish I could.

  • I'm super guilty of this!!!!

He averages about three naps a day between the time we get up and when DH gets home and I try to put him in his swing or crib for one nap of those three...the others he tends to nap on me or in the baby k'tan.  I also worry about what habits it could develop...everyone keeps telling me to just enjoy the time and not worry about it. So---here's hoping they're right!!

I wear E for most naps just like I did with C...and don't feel the least bit guilty about it!  And I get plenty done while she's sleeping - she just rides along.

They grow too quickly - enjoy the snuggles (and better, less stressful sleep) while you can ;-)

  • I get almost NOTHING done! I know it's only a matter of time before I have to go back to work.... she is in my arms and lap all day long and we bedshare every night, most of the night.... I think she is still a part of me LOL

  • I do it. I've not gone back to work yet, and DH teaches college online from home. So between the 2 of us she hardly ever gets put down during the day except to swing or play on her mat. And when we do put her down, she is always in the room with us. The swing is in our office, we have a minicrib in our living room, a RNP in the bathroom and then the cosleeper in our room...lol her crib in her room is currently being used for storage of her clothes that I need to put away! My house is messier than it should be, but she'll only be this snuggly for so long and I want to enjoy it every minute that I can.
  • I actually put him in the carrier, wait until he's been asleep for 20 minutes, and then transfer him to the crib. He's none the wiser. He generally takes two naps of two hours each, and sleeps 7-8 hours at night. Part of me thinks I should let him fall asleep on his own, but I know he can do that at night - so I just enjoy holding him while I can. Plus I have my hands free in the wrap so he goes with me while I do the chores that I can and once I've put him in the crib, I do the rest. Sometimes if he wakes up early from a nap I'll lay him on my chest and we'll both catch a short snooze. He's my first (possibly my only) and I'm going to enjoy all the snuggles while I can.
