I had a roommate years ago who let her cat lick the plates clean then just rinsed them and considered them clean. We not only had separate dishes once I found that out, but separate cabinets to store them! Just about made me sick!
There's no special snowflake there! I answered we have separate brushes for it because:
If he was washing them in steaming hot water sink of wat and lots of soap with a washcloth that gets replaced every night (yes, I really use a new washcloth every day), then it wouldn't bother me. When we had cats, we generally put them in the dishwasher along with our other dishes to run.
If it was just a scrub brush that is used on a regular basis and not cleaned often (I'm thinking of those scrub brushes where you put soap in the handle - I'm guessing not a ton of people put those in the dishwasher or washing machine to clean them) - then ICK.
We have separate sponges because we scrub up to 14 pet food bowls a day (impossible to dishwash every time) and because our cats eat raw food. It just makes sense to have a dedicated sponge for them. But if we only had a couple bowls to scrub and didn't feed raw I don't see why we wouldn't use the same one, since it would just be pre-dishwash scrubbing. (Our non dishwasher items like DH's expensive knives have their own sponge that nothing else touches, since I have OCD.). Speaking of, how us your kitty doing? Did you try the hook and eye catch on the door or get things straightened out at night another way?
I don't really understand the difference between the first two options... but I said Ick never. I know it's probably dumb but I would want to keep them separate.
My IL's let the dogs lick the plates/bowls after meals & then just put them in the dishwasher!! This absolutely disgusts me!!! I know that the dishwasher will clean it, but just knowing that the dogs licks them clean is just grose especially when I eat off it!

I took your idea of putting a door stopped under the door so that the door can't rattle : ) Now that the weather is getting better he is spending more time outside though so that makes things much better!

I just reread what I wrote.
Yeah, my cats loved water and a little quality time in the dishwasher. They didn't need to breath and the enjoyed scalding water.
DUH.
This is why one needs to reread when they answer a post.
