Running a 5K While Pregnant?

I'm a novice runner and want to sign up for my first 5K in September. My question is, are there any limitations I should be aware of if I were to become pregnant. My husband and I are thinking of TTC late summer so there is the chance I could be almost two months pregnant by the time the race came around. Thanks in advance!

  • If you're already running now then it shouldn't be a problem.  Most docs say you can continue doing whatever workout you were doing pre-preg.  You may be slower at that time, just follow what your body tells you.
Good luck!  I'm running a 5k in 3 weeks, I'll be 30 weeks pg at that time.

  • You should be fine, and if for some reason, you aren't feeling well enough to run, you can walk. I walked a 5k recently at 33 weeks.

Ditto this.  Make sure you're running now, because I wouldn't recommend starting to train for a 5k after you become pregnant.  But as long as you're regularly getting in 3 miles, then you should have no problem running a 5k after you're pregnant. (I still do about 2-3 miles a day and more on weekends)

  • You'll be completely fine.  I'm 5 months and still running 3 miles...I'm sure by 2 months you'll barely even be showing so your "bump" won't be bouncing around.  Unless you've had a miscarriage before, your doctor too will tell you it's fine.  Just ask her/him when the time comes.

  • I am still running 3-4 miles several times a week.  As long as you are running before you get pg, you are fine (according to docs).  Also use common sense like PP said, if you are not feeling good or cramping one day, slow down to a walk.  You will be happy if you keep up the running, helps with the weight gain and the delivery!!

  • start NOW!!!  For the first time in my life I've considered taking up running and now I'm brand new pregnant.  I doubt I'll still have that desire in me after this next kid is born.  If you've been doing it before you got preg then you can keep running during most of your pregnancy. But you can't start it up in the middle of it.  Good luck!!
