Question about kids at the beach

When you take your LOs to the ocean, do you put them in a life jacket of any sort? We are debating whether we need to get one. I don't think we'll be taking Ellie out very deep, and we definitely aren't going to take her out and let go of her, but should we have her in a life jacket or a puddle jumper or something just in case?

Re: Question about kids at the beach

  • I have to say, I grew up boating... we go almost every weekend during the summer to my parent's boat.  I already have two infant life jackets for Cerys for this year (they don't make them small enough for newborns, though).

Growing up around water makes me nervous with little ones, but I can also see if you guys have her hands and are on her like a hawk maybe just letting her have some arm floaties or something?

I am just to weary of water dangers, perhaps.  I know I wouldn't be comfortable around water like that with nothing on her.  If you do decide to get a life jacket, go for something comfy like neoprene.  She can pick out a cute design (they have all sorts of disney, sesame street, etc) and she'll be more likely to wear it and stay in it all day.

Another thought is- do you guys plan on spending all day at the beach every day?  Or just going for a few hours?  That makes a difference too.

  • We didn't, mainly because both of my kids were scared of the waves, LOL.  They wouldn't go close without one of us with them.  We were on the Atlantic in SC so the water there wasn't very calm & inviting.  We also sat kind of far away from the water. I guess it wouldn't hurt to bring one just to be on the safe side (we did have Mason's puddle jumper for the condo pool), but we definitely didn't need it for the beach in our case.

  • We've gone to the beach every year since Leah was born and she has never worn anything, mainly because we sit sort of far back from the waves, I watch her like a hawk, and she has never tried to wander toward the water without one of us near her. This year, however, I plan to bring along a life jacket or swimmies and I'll see how she does. I never, ever take my eyes off her, though, and I never take her out there alone (I have this horrible nightmare that I pass out from the heat and she wanders off....).

  • She does have a pair of Swimmies, so maybe we will just give those a try. If I worry about it there, I'm sure life jackets are readily available for purchase near the beach. :)

    Ditto all of this.
