Delivering at St. Vincent - When do I meet the delivery doctor?

I get my pre-natal care at Kaiser Interstate where I meet with a Certified Mid-Wife for my monthly appointments.  I haven't met with an actual OBGYN since I've gotten pregnant.  Shes.... Okay.  She seems kind of, how do I put this... Dingy?  Of course she is smart, she had to go to a million years of schooling to get where she is, but for some of the questions I have for her her response is "Hmm, I don't know, thats strange, but she sounds okay, so I wouldn't worry about it."  I failed my 1 hour GD test and I have to go in tomorrow morning for the 3 hour test, and she didn't tell me to fast before either of them, I had to call back the lab and ask them.  I'm not trying to complain about her, she's super nice and sweet, I'm just worried that I haven't met, and I'm not scheduled to meet with an actual doctor until I'm in labor.  Is this the norm?

And also, since I'm having my care at Kaiser, but I'm scheduled to deliver at St. Vincent, does that mean I'm not going to be meeting my delivery doctor until I go in to have my baby?  Don't people normally meet with and know their doctor prior to delivery?

Thanks for any insight :)

Re: Delivering at St. Vincent - When do I meet the delivery doctor?

  • I also have Kaiser - I did all my prenatal care at the Western/Beaverton clinic with a midwife because I preferred that to an OB.  I delivered at Sunnyside, but I think it is pretty much the same at St. V's and you get whomever is on shift when you come in, unless you are having a scheduled c section, then you get your particular doctor.  I was in labor for a long time and saw (from the best I can remember) 2-3 midwives, then at least 2 MD's because I ended up having a c section.  That is one of the downsides to Kaiser in my opinon, it is just luck of the draw.

  • Yeah, that's kind of what I figured.  I suppose that's fine, i would kind of like to know the person who is going to be delivering her a little more than a quick introduction between contractions, but I'm sure everything will be okay.  Thanks :)

Do you remember your midwife's name at the Beaverton clinic?  My midwife's name is Rhonda Chick, and she transferred over from Beaverton not too long ago...

It was Rhonda and we loved her, I was sad that she moved over to Interstate because if we have another baby, I would want to see her again, but it is just to far for me!

  • I had kaiser and delivered at St. V's. I didn't meet a doctor until delivery time. All of the nurses were great. The doctor came in with a student, did their duty, and left. I wasn't bothered by any of this. I was told by Kaiser that I would get whatever Kaiser dr. was on call ahead of time. Though when I delivered there was a kaiser midwife present, but she just stood to the side while the providence doctor did the delivery.
  • Okay, I guess I'm okay with this, I was just unsure.  Normally I assumed that you met with your delivery doctor prior to actually being in labor, but I guess not.  Thanks for your responses! :)

  • I have Kaiser and live closer to St V's than Sunnyside. We really wanted a midwife to deliver our LO and St Vs only has midwives there at night. So, I decided to go to Sunnyside. I had never met the midwife but she was amazing, her name is Sharon Blake--I delivered without meds and I dont know if I would have made it without her. I had a GREAT experience at Sunnyside all around.
