Is this normal?

Each night, before his last nap and before bedtime, Sully screams for literally half an hour and then an hour. Usually we rock him/ nurse him until he falls asleep. An entire hour of crying seems really excessive to me. I don't want to CIO with him because he is far to young, but do other LO's cry like this? Last night, I broke down crying because I felt so horrible. Its not reflux or anything like that, he just seems to fight sleep.

Re: Is this normal?

  • Has this been going on for months?  Or is it a recent habit (in which case you could maybe blame a growth spurt or teething)?  I know a lot of babies have the witching hour, which could be coinciding with bedtime for him.  Have you tried putting him down for the night earlier?  Maybe if you put him down before he's overtired, he won't fight sleep so much.  It does seem like that's a lot of crying every night.

The last few nights I've been noticing that DD doesn't want to nurse to sleep.  It's almost like having my breast close to her face is keeping her awake.  The only thing that's working for us right now is having DH sway her back and forth until she's asleep.

Agreed- wish I had better advice for you, but I've got nothing.  Hope you resolve this soon for your own sanity!!

  • H gets this way when she is over tired. Is it possible that he needs to sleep longer or go to bed earlier?

  • This has been pretty much  every night since birth. He ALWAYS cries before sleep but during the day its only for 10-15 minutes. His bedtime is 7:30, and once down, he sleeps great. After a while, I am positive he is overtired, but seriously he sleeps from 8:00 (ish) to 5:30, 6:30-7:30, 8:00-9:00 10:00-11:45, 1:00-1;30, 2;15-3;45, 5;00-6;30 and then back to bed at 7;30 to fall asleep by 8;00(ish). Can a baby sleep TOO much? I feel like I am constantly trying to get him to sleep. Please note, naps in italics are taken in the car or on the bus and there is no crying. Should I call my pedi? Before, we just assumed the witching hour thing, but I was told that goes away by like 3 months...doesn't seem to be going anywhere :(
  • Doesn't sound normal. Maybe colic? I'd call and ask the ped.

  • Our LO always crys around 7-730 pm right before his last bottle/nursing for the night then he falls asleep. Sometimes he crys for 15 minutes, but times it has been an hour. Its totally normal its just your baby's 'witching hour'. As he gets older it happens less and less .

  • Lucas used to cry like that until we moved his bedtime up a little earlier. He was just over tired.

I just added it up in my head, and it seems that he's sleeping about 16 hours a day (if I did my math right--no guarantees).  So that doesn't seem like too much for a 3 month old.

I found an interesting article a few weeks ago that you may want to check out.  It's an anti-CIO article, but talks about how some babies always cry to release tension before they go to sleep.  Not sure if it will help you stop Sully from crying, but you may be able to better understand why he does.

  • Maybe, he has gas. Try Baby's Bliss Gripe Water (Helps with Gas, Colic, Hiccups, and Teething). It is an all natural supplement and works well for our LO when she has gas every now and again. I usually put it in her bottle and it works well for her. She never tastes it. Good Luck!
