s/o Ferber with older babies

M has started waking up in the middle of the night this week and taking over an hour to go back to sleep. He was sick over the weekend, so we gave him a pass, but we want to get him back to STTN now that he's feeling better. The problem is now he can stand up in his crib, so he just stands there and cries. How do we deal with this? He's pretty stubborn and I just don't see him deciding to lay down and go back to sleep.

He'll eventually either lie down or fall asleep standing up and slump down. That sounds kind of cold, but you can't really make him lie down. (I mean, you could do things like rock him or otherwise soothing him, but then you're not really Ferberizing.)

  • I think you have to re-Ferberize, go in, put him down, ssshhh, and walk out, keep doing it until he falls back asleep. It's normal for the sleep cycle to get interrupted when learning a new skill, and sounds like he's learning to walk. I would do the interval for a few days and if that does not work, just not go in at all. It's rough though...

  • We had to re-Ferberize DD twice, once when when we moved (it was really disruptive to her at 9 months and once after a particularly long month of teething where we got really off schedule (around 13 months).  It was much worse when she could call our names and stand - we would often find her asleep sitting/leaning against the crib rails till she got back in the habit of putting herself to sleep.
