Trip L&D Confirmed I will be getting Epidural

Well yesterday around 11am I went to the bathroom and saw a smear of blood on the toilet paper, it wasn't a lot and I was busy at work so I didn't think too much of it. Then about 3:30 yesterday I started having contractions, nothing major, then all the sudden I had an extremely painful one so I told DH we were going to the hospital. We went down to L&D and of course they put me on a monitor. Well long story short Baby looked fine on the monitor and no consistent contractions. They bring in a portable u/s machine to check location of placenta, it was where it should be and everything looked fine again.

Then it they decided they wanted to do a cervical check...I haven't had one yet and was dreading this. (See this post https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/52528576.aspx  about being assaulted 5 years ago).

I did talk to my doctor and he felt that an epidural was probably going to be a good option for me, I was still thinking I would try to do without as I didn't think childbirth would trigger anything. I also told them when I was being admitted yesterday about my history and as few as checks as possible and only females doing the check other than my physician.

Well when the female doctor went to do the check it did not go well. My legs kept closing, and then I started crying and freaking out. The doctor was very gentle and nice, but that didn't matter, it took 8 minutes for her to do the cervical check because my legs kept closing and I kept tensing up. It wasn't physically painful just emotionally painful. And poor DH had no idea what to do other than hold my hand and tell me it was okay, but that didn't seem to help. Needless to say after this DH and I  are certain I will be getting an epidural as soon as possible.

Oh turns out I have a bacterial infection so they gave me some meds to treat that, but everything else is good with baby and me:)

  • I'm glad that you and baby are doing well. And I don't know your whole story, but I think having a plan in place and knowing that you'll be able to relax your body will make your birth experience wonderful. You sound like you have a lot of support and a good grip on what you need to do and that's great. I wish you all the best. :)

  • Glad you and LO are both in good shape. So sorry to hear about how the exam affected you -- hopefully the birth if your LO will help dealing with these situations more positive!

I am so, so sorry that happened to you. My heart truly aches for your right now. I'm glad that your doctors seem to be very understanding about the situation, but that still must be so difficult for you.

It sounds like some pain meds might be a good way to go for you -- that is a lot to handle on top of the pain. I'm glad you were able to make that decision before the Big Day. If you ever need to vent or just talk, we are always here for you.

I'm very glad that everything is all right with you and the baby!

  • ugh, every time i think of you having to go through an exam it hurts my heart for you. sorry you had to go through this so far in advance. maybe it would help to share your story with other attending physicians just in case your doctor is not available, etc.? the more they know the more they are in a position to tend to your individual needs. did you ever find remind your regular doc? i feel terrible you have to have such stress on top of everything else. big hugs from texas!

  • I'm glad to hear all is well with you and baby, and that you have been able to make an informed choice about how to deal with the pain/stress of labor.  I'm sorry the exam affected you so negatively, I can't imagine being in your position.

  • I'm sorry to hear this has been such a struggle already. Have you talked to a counselor or anything? An epidural may take away some of the physical pain of the situation, but it doesn't physically change what is happening, and it doesn't change how you will feel about it. I know there are resources out there about succeeding in L&D in spite of what you've been through, and I'm going to my "birth expert" friend to ask about it. I hope you can figure out the best way to make this work for you, and send my love and prayers.
