Birthday party at 6 pm and cake only???

DH's family drives me crazy sometimes.  His BIL/SIL are having a 6 pm birthday party for DH's 5 yo nephew on a WEEKNIGHT with cake and ice cream only.  Seriously?  Who has a party at dinner time and doesn't serve dinner?  They do this every year and and it drives me crazy...     OK.... vent over :)

Well dinner time depends on who you are. My kids eat at 5 or 5:30 so this would work out well for us to get there celebrate, have cake and leave in enough time to get kids in bed.

  • I can see how that would be really inconvinient for some people- esp. people who get off work at 5 and need to get their children and feed them by 6. Or people who normally eat at 5:30/6:00 ... I personally wouldn't throw that party.

Can your BIL & SIL afford to throw a pizza party? How many people are going? Is this a  small family only thing or a party with friends?

  • Yeah, that seems a little tacky to me. If it were 7, I can maybe see only having cake but 6...I dont think so.

  • LOL.  We are doing this exact same thing for our almost 3-year old next week.  His birthday is on a Thursday so we invited them over for cake/ice cream at 6.  His big birthday celebration will be 2 days later on Saturday when we go to a local theme park.  I didn't' feel like having a celebration on a third day, so I just chose a time that would work for them after work.  They can choose to come/not come.

It didn't occur to me that it'd be rude to invite them over at 6 and not serve dinner.  But oh well, it's done now.

Let's just say BIL makes 6-figures, I think they should be able to afford pizza.  There will probably be 10 people (max) at the party.

  • I find the whole thing tacky..having it on a weeknight and also not serving at least pizza.

  • What if you say... "the kids are used to eating around that time. would you like us to bring pizza for everyone?" and then the only sane response would be for your BIL/SIL to say that they hadn't thought of that and offer to have dinner as well.

  • it is shocking to me how many people are clueless when it comes to throwing a party!

    This!!

Why is it on a weeknight? Why is it at dinner time without dinner?

Laney, I would seriously think about adding pizza to your menu.

I would seriously consider adding some food to your menu. 6pm is like the worst possible time to not serve dinner.

OP-I would offer to bring over pizza and see what they say. Maybe they really are just that clueless?

I think I would do this.

What time do you eat dinner at your place? I'd consider having something to eat.
