Mason's Birth Story -Born 11/5/10 - HELPP and Pre E- Long Story

Its a little late, but here it goes:

  • Up to 20 Weeks - Perfect Pregnancy. No morning sickness and only gained 7 lbs.
  • 30 Weeks - My BP started to increase and my legs, feet and hands started to swell. No matter how long I kept them up, they were huge all the time.
  • 32 Weeks - One morning in the shower I lost vision on my left eye for about an hour. I called my OB and they asked me to come in ASAP. My BP was extremely high. I was taken out of work and put on bedrest. I  also had to visit my OB twice a week until delivery for a non-stress test and ultrasound. The days of bedrest seemed like an eternity. There are is only so much reading and surfing the web you can do. I was only allowed to go to the bathroom and kitchen to make a quick snack.
  • At my 37 week appt non stress test ultrasound - My BP was still elevated and my swelling was Unbearable. I had gained 48lbs in 17 weeks. YIKES!!! All fluid retention. I mentioned to the nurse that I was having slight pain in my upper right side. She kinda shrugged it off like it was nothing, and I did too. I though that it was normal 37 week pregnant girl discomfort. So on my way I went. since I had made it to the 37th week, I figured the worst that could happen is my water will break and I will deliver this baby. So to celebrate I went to Target to do a little browsing through the baby dept and then I went to visit my parents for a while. It was sooooooo great just to be out of the house for a little while. As the evening went along, the pain in my upper right side kept getting a little more stronger. It wasnt like a quick pain, it was a constant nagging ache. I mentioned it to my mom and DH, but just as I did they kinda shrugged it off to just being miserably pregnant. So I went home and tried to rest for a while. I fell asleep around 11PM, but was right back up at 2AM. The pain in my right side was unbearable. I couldnt take it anymore. My DH was asleep, so I tried to be as quiet as possible since he had to be at work in a few hours. I called the on call OB and he wasnt the OB I normally dealt with, however he was theone on call for the practice. He was absolutely no help at all. He acted like it was no big deal, and to come to the office first thing @ 8AM to be evaluated. So I figured that I might as well do something productive, like pack my clothes and the baby's clothes since I hadnt done that yet.
  • Friday Nov 5th 8AM - I get checked in at OB's office and get called back. I do the usual weight check ( AHHHHHH - 205lbs REALLY??? WTF?) and urine test. I had increased traces of protein in my urine, so that was my first red flag, besides the pain in my side that has me in tears now. I get my big prego body up on the exam table, have an internal exam -1 Stage 1 CM dialated :( The OB I saw wasnt my usual Dr. and she said that I was maybe having a gallbladder attack, but she wanted to see me over to L&D just to be check out. The OB that I normally saw was actually on call the next two days. I was grateful he was there, since he was aware of the past 37 weeks of my pregnancy.I arrived at L&D and got settle into my room. THe fun begins here. After what seemed liked 20 tubes of blood drawn out of my arm, the OB came in and said that he was a little concerned with the results of my bloodwork, and that he would start inducing labor right now. My bloodwork was showing that my kidneys and liver were in distress....So thats why I had upper abdominal pain. I'm going to be honest......I was SCARED. This wasnt what I planned for or mentally prepared for. So in goes the IV of Pitocin, Magnesium, and a catheter. The mag IV set me on FIRE and I stayed on FIRE for the next 36 hours. The pitocin was turned all the way up........I was having very powerful contractions, and this went on for 8 longgggggggg hours. Its now 7:30 PM and the OB comes in to check me, and said the following..." Mrs . My Last name, unfortunately you have not progressed at all" That's right *** no progress after all of those contractions. He also mentioned that my liver function was declining quickly and that a Emergency CSection needed to be done ASAP. So in 35 minutes I was on the Operating table, Spinal block in, and having a baby. This is where my memory gets a little fuzzy... I remember hearing gushes of fluid and hearing the doctors and nurses tell Mason HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! After that its a blur. Its a blur because during Mason being taken out of my uterus, his shoulders tore my uterus and I lost a huge amount of blood. Enough that the Dr called for 2 pints, because he thought he was going to need them if he couldnt stop the bleeding. What happened for the next 6 hours, I have no clue. I was out of it, and drugged up.
  • At 3AM Saturday morning I met the LOVE of my life for the first time and was able to hold him and just be amazed at the BLESSING that just entered my life. Mason was a 6lb, 21 inch long MIRACLE. I immediately fell in LOVE with that precious face. Its funny how that one split second in time, erased the scared and terrifying moments in my memory that had just occured the two days before. It all seems so long ago now, and if given the chance I would do it all over again.
  • My recovery from my CSection was very un-eventful. After 6wks Post Partum I was for the most part back to my normal self. 50 lbs lighter and able to wear shoes....not flip flops YAY!!!! I think I peed myself to death for the first week. 11lbs of fluid lost a few days after coming home.
  •  I am now spending every waking moment chasing a HAPPY and Healthy 6 month old that is the greatest accomplishment in my life. If you made it to the end of this story, THANK YOU for reading it. I know its rather long.

  • Oh honey, wow. Congratulations on the birth of your son. Your labor sounds very similar to mine. I also had pre-e and gained 20lbs in one week, had to go through all that mag. sult, cath., and pitocin, so I know how you felt. I'm so happy to hear that little Mason is doing so well.
