Ronald McDonald Debate

Here's the scoop

Umm, I'm sorry. It's not a clown's fault or any marketing targeted towards kids that there is obesity in children. I think it's utterly ridiculous to blame anyone but the parents for making poor health choices. If your whiny kid is begging for McDonalds and you give in every time and make them fat, that is YOUR fault and can reap the consequences for those choices. If adults go on diets because they hit the drive-thru too many times and are putting on extra pounds is it the company's fault for being on their way to work and having commercials for the new menu items?

No one is making you eat there. No one is forcing the food down your throat. Sure, it's cheap to feed kids at fast food places, but that is the parent's choice. McDonalds is not making you eat there OR making you fat. That is on you.  People are freaking ridiculous.  When is this society going to start taking responsibility for their own actions and quit pointing the finger and issuing blame for their own choices?

Re: Ronald McDonald Debate

  • Everyone wants someone to blame. How is RM any different than selling Trix yogurt or having Tony the Tiger on a cereal box? ALL products market towards children, it may not be ethical but as parents we still make the choice.

There is nothing wrong with letting your child eat McD, but just like any other thing in life moderation is key. Its not McD fault that parents let their child eat there regularly. McD has gotten so much crap and have made changes to please the consumer. They offer apples & milk with the kids meals. It all goes back to the parents. Don't order fries for your kids, or don't eat there at all. Pack food when you go out, or stop at a healthier take out option.

  • My kid loves cows. Should I blame CFA for MAKING us eat there? Yes. Yes I think so. I have no control over it whatsoever.

Is it SO hard to say "no" to your kids? Apparently parents are getting lazier and lazier. It's called discipline.

  • And why always target McDonalds? WTH did they do that is so different than other FF places?

  • OMG. The only thing Ronald McDonald is responsible for is creeping me out. He has nothing to do with obesity in America. Companies are always going to market to kids, that isn't going to change. And you know what? I don't care. B/c I'm the parent, and I have the ability to say no.

Nothing bugs me more than people who won't take responsibility for anything!

hehehe! I agree with everything above :)

  • I completely agree.  A lot of companies are catching flack for targeting children lately, not just McDonalds.  I hear it on CNN regularly on my drive home.  That is besides the point though, McDs really gets hit hard constantly and they always seem to be the one everyone wants to point their finger at.  It is because they are so cheap.  If Taco Bell still had the chihuahua they might be in trouble too, but they target college kids instead.

Have you guys seen the news report on one of those shows like 20/20 or Nightline or something similar where they followed this hispanic family of 4 that had very little money and they ate at McDonalds ALL the time?  They would show them at the grocery store and the kids would ask for produce and they would say no because it cost them too much money and they just couldn't afford it.  They compared the price of making a salad for 4 vs. $4 for the whole family to eat hamburgers and, really, it doesn't compare.  If I just heard this as I am typing it I would say, "make more money! the produce is important!" but they really couldn't afford the produce.  It was very sad and eye opening.  Oh, and the dad worked a full time job.  They were not unemployed or lazy.

Anyway, I don't eat at McDonald's and I am still fat, what does that tell you? haha Well, I do drink their $1 sweet tea :)

And to summarize my essay Wink It is up to parents.  We are very careful with what Ben eats because I don't want him to end up like me.  We take him out but moderation is key.  Besides, if you aren't eating at McDs it really is too expensive!

I have seen that. It is very sad, but the parents can still make better choices than McD. $4 at McD can fill your kids up quickly, but they will be hungry again soon! Rice, beans, bread, peanut butter, tortillas etc are expensive but can be filling & healthy. I think part of their issue is lack of education.

This is very true!  It is a huge matter of education.  Our society as a whole is very uneducated on food choices.

Don't get me wrong, they have other choices but it was a good peice that shows what a lot of people are thinking.

  • I'm a little late chiming in - but don't think Ronald McDonald promotes obesity - although he does scare the beejesus out of me!  But i will say that kids need to be more active - play outside instead of sitting in front of the TV and playing video games.  Parents need to set a good example and actively engage their kids in FUN exercise and also set the bar for good eating habits.  I will say that I'm not as good on the 2nd part - I have been known to sneak in the pantry and eat something sugary!
