Baby Names

Dixon for a girl?

My mom's maiden name was Dixon and there were no boys in her family to carry on the name. Her parents have both died so I want to continue the name somehow as a tribute to them. I think Dixon is kind of a cute and fun first name, but I don't like that it's gender neutral.

Do you think it could be a good girl's name? Do you think of a boy or girl when you hear it? Do you love/like/dislike or hate it? I could always use it as a middle name...

Re: Dixon for a girl?

  • I definitely think boy, and I don't agree that it's gender neutral. It just doesn't seem like a first name to me.

Do I think of a boy or a girl? NEITHER.

Do I love/like/dislike or hate it? Hate. I can see a lot of bad puns coming out of this. I think it would make a great middle name, though!

    First name? Terrible. Hate.

Middle name? Great way to honor her.

Yeah, pretty much this. I like the look of it oddly enough, but I see 'Dixie' as a way for people to get around using it. I think it's perfect as a middle name. I have to wonder how far Dixon is from being noticed because of all the Mason popularity.

Anyway, it feels like you're trying to put a square peg in a round hole...it seems like it could work, but doesn't really. Then again, if I met a kid named, Dixon, a girl especially, I would hope there was a good name story behind it to help ease the awkwardness.

I was good friends in college with a girl named Dixon (not sure if it was a family name for her)...she's the only person I've ever known with this name so I think of it as a girl's name.  It totally fit her, but it's not a name I would use.

eta:  I agree with pp that it would be fine as a middle name.

  • I think it's a bad bad first name for a baby girl (or boy)! But if you need to include it then I think using it as a mn would be a wise choice!

I'd go with Dixon as a MN for a boy, and Dixie as a MN for a girl to honor the name.

I think it is a terrible first name for a girl, only because it is my married last name. There are so many jokes that go along with it. I think as a first name for a girl she would get teased and jokes made constantly. I do think it would be a great middle name to honor your mom.
  • It's NMS at all for either, but there is a male character on 90210 named Dixon. So I think boy. Definitely not good for a girl.

  • All I think is "Get some Dixon" and not it's not so nice for a little girl.

Maybe for a mn with NN Dixie but no, it should absolutely NOT be used for a girl

  • I honestly wasn't being pulled either way, boy or girl, and didn't mind it so much... until I started reading the other replies.  Man, it sucks that it takes 1 teeny comment to start the ball rolling... and that's their point exactly!  That being said, I agree w/using it as a middle name!

You got flamed on your board because you posted something inflammatory. This board is a place for asking opinions, and we give them honestly. Stop with your little "crusade" about how mean we are over here. It's quite annoying!

  • I think it would work well for a middle name, but don't really like it for a girl's first name.

On a side note, my aunt named both of her daughters with her maiden name (Taylor) as their middle name.  It's a neat bond that they share and they both always said, that if they have children (male or female) they would pass on the matching middle name as a nod to our family background (where the name - at least in our branch - has tied out because of no sons in our generation).  Dixon is a nice name and the one that you could always use as a middle name for either a boy or a girl (or both).

  • Dixon for a first name is awful.

  • Dixon is TERRIBLE for a little girl. A middle name would be okay, but could still lead to some teasing. My mn is Georgia, and I got teased for it as a kid b/c it wasn't Lynn or Marie, but kids these days have much more unique names than they did 15 years ago, so maybe it wouldn't be sooo bad.

  • You can't possibly believe anything good would come from having a daughter whose name starts with "Dicks"....can you?

Ditto a pp- use Dixon as a MN for a boy, Dixie as a MN for a girl.

  • I think of Dixie Carter - though I would say you have to be from the south to pull off a name like Dixie.  I would say save it for the middle name.

I usually don't like to use the word hate for a name cause I don't want to offend anyone that may have but  I really would hate this on a little girl..  I just imagine it getting a lot of bad teasing with Dix     Please use it as a MN
