? about antidepressents

I was taking 10mg Lexapro for a couple months and doing well on it. My therapist suggested we increase the dosage b/c I was having some breakthrough symptoms and trouble sleeping. I've been on 15mg for a couple weeks and I've been having more trouble sleeping (worse than before, almost like when I was on Wellbutrin-- tired but unable to fall asleep, then restless sleep) and feeling crappy. AF is around the corner but I feel like my old, unmedicated self and I really don't like it.

Is it possible to have these effects when on a dosage that's too high? I have a follow up in a couple weeks but I'm wondering if I should drop back to the 10mg.

Maybe...definitely a question for your doctor.

It seems like she would want to lower your dosage if you were already having issues at 10mg.  Kwim?

  • I'm going to call her in the AM, and hopefully she'll get back to me before we leave Friday. I just didn't know if anyone had experience with this, if taking too much of a med can cancel out the good effects, KWIM?

I was doing well on the 10mg. I'm wondering now if it was a situational thing vs. a med thing.

  • When you talk to her, maybe see if there's another med you could go on that is similar in what it does, but may be different in terms of side effects.  I know that when I was on Prozac and my doctor increased my dosage, I had no added benefits and a lot more side effects.

  • ::Lurking:: But I'm on lexapro...and one of my side effects (affects?  I'm terrible with those two) is trouble sleeping.  To be "normal" during the day, I have to take a higher dose...but that makes sleeping more difficult for me.  So I have sleeping pills for when I need them.  HTH.

  • I was on 10mg Lexapro for a while several years ago. It made me sleep like crap. I'd lay there, wide awake for hours. Finally fall asleep, & it was very restless. Toss & turn, wake myself up, fall back asleep, wake up for no reason, rinse & repeat.

    I'm sorry, it sucks.

  • Interesting. I wonder why it wasn't doing that earlier.

I took some tylenol pm last night and it didn't help much. I've even cut out coffee and tea in hopes that would help.

  • yes- OR it's just not the drug for you. my h had trouble on lexapro (and btw, there ar emany god choices that come in a 4 dollar generic, which is niiiiice!)

he switched to celexa with some success.

I also take celexa after becoming immune to prozac (it just stopped working, I felt worse than ever...it was sad.)

    I like it. lots better.

it was an easy transition (I just stopped the prozac and started the celexa (generic is citalopram, also four dollars.)

I'd look into a switch rather than just playing with your dosage.

    talk to your doc.

see what she thinks. citalopram also has less uh...sexual side effects, which is nice. lexapro and prozac are total libido murderers.

good luck! you do not have to suffer!

  • I was on celexa (and generics of both!) and it wasn't really working for me either.

MH would love for me to feel like having sex again, haha!

This constant onslaught of rain isn't helping either. Hopefully the week in sunny FL will help too :)

FWIW, I have been on Zoloft for about a year now and while I haven't had trouble sleeping, I have had some crazy vivid dreams.  I will take those over lack of sleep though.  Good luck!

  • well, I know celexa and lexapro are in the same family (ssri)- so perhaps that family is not the one for you? maybe you nead an snri (effexor, cymbalta)

do you have anxiety or panic? if not, maybe welbutrin?

  • I tried Wellbutrin and I hated it. Felt like I had 5 cups of coffee on an empty stomach all day-- jittery and twitchy. No sleep. I lasted 5 days and said fukc it I'm not taking this anymore!
