Anyone using "Time ins" instead of "time outs"?

I posted on my AP message board asking about time outs and was sent a link about "time ins"

 https://www.enjoyparenting.com/daily-groove/time-in

This is exactly what I was looking for in relation to time out methods. I never viewed "time outs" for us to be a form of punishment or something to use as a threat.

I've been using "time ins" for about a week now (though, I don't need  to use them often, so I've only done 2) and I love how connected we become when we remove ourselves from unwanted behaviour (from both of us, his acting up and my frustration) and just sit, connected and surrounded by love and peace. It's really worked to get us centered and able to move on to a new activity.

  • Very interesting.  I booked marked it for future reference.  Thanks!

  • We do.  We also have a permissive time out (Ryan is told he can have his tantrum and get it out, but he's got to take it to another room -- the guest bedroom, not his room).  He rarely takes us up on the latter though.
  • I've never heard of that before K.  Thanks for sharing.  I'd love to hear an update after you've been using it for a while!

  • This approach is discussed in Positive Discipline and a couple other similar books I have read. We do this with Ty- essentially remove him from the situation and I sit with him while he calms down. At home, I can remove him and allow him to experience all of his feelings whatever they may be...in public, we usually leave and retreat to the car.

  • The Positive Discipline book talks about using "positive time outs" which sounds kind of similar.  We haven't tried either yet but I can feel it coming soon...
  • We do a modified version of this...sometimes it's filled with love and sometimes we're both stressed out.  I feel that Ryan is too little for a "time out"...but he does know when he's done something that I don't like. :)

Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.
