I am a teacher and I know that leagally I can take twelve weeks, but I have to use all my sick leave and go into deduct if I go over what I have saved up... So I am thinking about being gone November 15th - Jan 3rd, I would like to take more since I wont be penalized for Thanksgiving and Christmas... I have my students in mind though and think it would be bad to transition them back after Christmas with a sub then transition to me being back a week or two later...
I don't know!!! Plus, I don't want to go into deduct, I would like to use my short-term disablity check to pay doctor and hospital bills, not just turn it over to the central office to cover my deduct... ![]()
Any other teachers?
Re: Teachers and Maternity Leave?
We have to use our sick days first as well so I am planning to return at the start of the second semester -- about the 3rd week January. As long as everything goes well **fingers crossed** that would even leave me with a few sick days in case I need to take them after I return.
Right now I'm in limbo though because my district is facing 20 some furloughs and I'm waiting to find out if I might get cut. In a way, unemployment would be a "paid maternity leave" of sorts but then again, I don't know when I would be called back.
I am the same situation as you, I have 30 sick days now and will probably only build up to about 33 before baby gets here (as I will have to use half days for Dr. appointments) I would also like to use my short term disability for things other than paying back for sick days. However I 100% know in my heart I will not be ready to come back the first day after Christmas break, and I won't be ready to send my teeny tiny little one to day care yet.
When it comes to what is best with my students, I don't think the transition back from break will be bad for them with a sub....because they will have already had that sub before break and will know what to expect with him/her (and the sub should have already have had plenty of time to set their expectations/routines).
Right now I am playing it by ear, but I see myself going back around Jan 15th or somewhere in there

Talk to your union. I can apply to my union after my sick leave runs out to cover the remaining 6-8 weeks. According to FMLA, I can take around 12 weeks, but the union will only cover this much. It's better than nothing!
I'm planning on coming back 2-3 weeks before our major state testing in March. If you get a good sub, the kids aren't going to be scarred. You have your own kid to worry about now.
