If your kids go to school or pre-k- how often (RE: backpacks)

How often do you have to buy a new backpack?  Do they get beat up pretty quickly or last a few years?

I have only had this experience with DD#1 but I usually bought her a new backpack each year, especially when she was younger (dragged on the ground a lot). As she got older she would decide if she needed/wanted a new one for that school year.  If they were still in decent shape she kept them for overnight trips and such.

  • We buy him a new backpack every year. Its fun for him to pick it out and we only spend about $20 on each one.

  • You can use the same backpack. I got them a small toddler one when my kids first started (2.5-3YO) and then the next year, got a new one that they will use for their remaining 2 years at preschool. Then I think I'm going to do a backpack every year when elementary school starts.

  • I want to buy ds (he's almost 3 1/2) a PBK backpack, but spending $40 and then having to replace it often doesn't seem like the best idea.  hmm....

  • DS#1 is the only one in school.  He just finished his first year in prek 3's, and is moving on to prek 4's next school year.  We got him a backpack from Super Target that he picked out (Transformers- Bumblebee).  He'll use it again next year too.

When he starts kindergarden, we'll get him a higher quality backpack to use through 8th grade.  Probably a Land's End or Jansport backpack.

In prek they don't have any books or anything. They occasionally bring home projects and some papers, so the backpack will last.  But once they start to get books, homework, etc. they need a better quality bag.  That's what my mom did with us.

I have gotten all backpacks so far from PBK.......it's not a waste of money to me since they use it often......

  • They have inexpensive backpacks at Wal-Mart and Target around the time school starts. When ds is old enough for school, he'll get a new one every year. I remember picking out a new backpack every year and loved it!
