Hi Ladies, I wrote on this board a few months ago about possibly moving to the hillsboro area. Well here we are! What a culture shock from a big city outside of Detroit, MI. where I'm from. I'm trying to make the best of it. I was looking up things to sign my almost 3 year old up for, and there's nothing in this town! I would love to get together with other mom's for playdates but I don't even know where to begin. I had such a wonderful group of mom friends in my hometown...but I'm determined to make the best of this move. We moved here for my husband's job which is in Greenfield, another small town with very little in it. If anyone has any suggestions I am open for anything!!! I don't mind driving a ways for a playdate or even to get my son involved in sports or activities. I also have another son, 6 weeks old! Let me know of anything! Thanks again!!!
Jessica (Oh, and I'm not familiar with how to work this site, so I hope I find your messages and/or comments easily!)
Re: hillsboro, ohio
Yeah, Hillsboro is definitely not known for being a high entertainment area! I would recommend looking into zoo passes (our zoo is great... and it has a reciprocity agreement so you can use it at a bunch of other zoos throughout the country). There's also King's Island about an hour out from Hillsboro. Good luck, and welcome to Ohio... where you never know what kind of weather it will be. And allergies/sinuses!!
Be sure to have some Skyline!
Welcome to ohio!! We live in Hillsboro! We moved here a year and a half ago after living in cincy for 3 years. DH grew up here and his family still lives here. I grew up in an even more rural area (imagine that!) so it's not a shock to us even though we lived in the city for a few years. Trust me, there will be times that you love this laid back style of living...especially when you've driven here for awhile then head to the city with all that crazy traffic!
I agree there really isn't much to do around here. But we aren't too far from the eastside of cincy so it's easy to make the drive.
You don't have to give me your full address...but in what part of Hillsboro do you live? We live pretty much in the middle of town. If you've driven down the main street that goes by the courthouse then you've driven by our house.
Not sure how long you've been here or how much you've explored but I'll just give you a few places and things to do and you might already know some of it.
First there's Liberty Park. This is great for picnics and letting your 3 yo. play. They have a nice playground, swings, and sandbox. This is also where the YMCA is located. We've been members but currently are not. We also had DS in swim class last winter and he loved it. You might want to check out any other classes for your toddler...not sure what all they have available right now.
Another place to let your LO play are the playgrounds at the elementary school. The school is fairly new and they have 3 awesome play sets; its always open. My son could spend hours here.
If you guys are into baseball there is a really nice youth baseball park called Shaffer Park. We will be there a lot this summer watching DH's younger brothers play.
There's also a public pool that you can join. We've never gotten a pass but are seriously considering it for this summer (DH and I are both teachers so we have all summer off together).
Rocky Fork State Park is about 5-10 minutes out of town. Not sure if you guys are boaters or campers but you might want to check it out. There's also Long's Retreat Campground about 30 minutes away. They have a website you can look at. I worked there for 4 summers as a lifeguard in high school. Very family friendly with things like go-carts, waterslides, water games, etc.
Those are just some things I can think of around here off the top of my head. Like PP mentioned, Kings Island isn't far away. Also, Milford and Eastgate are an easy drive. JumpZone (indoor inflatables) is in Milford and there is shopping, Chuck e. cheese, mini golf, in eastgate.
I would love to get together for playdates and show you around hillsboro if you'd like. I have a newborn girl right now though (born 5/10/11) so it would have to be once things have calmed down a little around here. LOL. Right now we're trying to get BFing down and get into a routine. I also have a 2.5 yo boy.
Let me know if you have any questions and we'll try to make a plan later on to meet up!
oh my gosh, you just made my week!!! Congratulations on your newborn!! I have a newborn born 4-4-11. We live right by town on 50. (chillicothe ave) My number is 586-291-2392 if you wouldn't mind giving me a call when you have time of course! I would absolutely love to get together for playdates! My almost 3 year old would love it...he misses all our playdates back home. We just got back from McDonalds and he was in heaven playing with the other kids! Well congrats again and I hope to hear from you soon!!!!
