Breastfeeding

When does it get easier?

I have been trying to EBF for almost 6 weeks since Isaac came home from the NICU.  We have seen two LC and made numerous phone calls.  It has improved but I still have to strip down everytime, I still have a pumping schedule, I still get sore nipples...and pinched nipples, and I feel like I will never get out of my bathrobe, let alone leave the house again.  Everyone says it will get easier when they get older....but when?!  Share your success story here!

Re: When does it get easier?

  • It's going to vary....for me it was around 6 weeks that the pain went away, etc...but if you've had longer lasting issues it may take longer to feel 'normal' again.

Definitely get out though, even if just for a short errand on your own.  It'll save your sanity!

  • DS is 7 wks and it is just now starting to get better. We aslso saw 2 LC because i had major sore nipples with scabs and bleeding in the beginning.

I also realized this past week that i needed to relax ant make it a science when he needed to latch on and that helped tons! GL dont give up!

  • For us it was difficult until last Thursday. Latch issues, extreme case of thrush, 6 different meetings with a LC... finally I just resigned myself to the fact I would have to EP. Last Thursday I was fed up and ditched the pump and have been EBF since. It isn't easy, we still have latch issues accompanied by pretty bad pain when he first latches, but I kinda feel like we're starting from the beginning. Hang in there though! I don't think it's the norm for it to take 3 months.

  • I EP, and it took at least 6 weeks for me to feel at all in control of my life and not like a piece of raw exhausted meat. Then about 10-12 weeks it got a LOT better as my LO was suddenly able to just hang out and entertain herself a little, rather than being constantly held and entertained. So from 0-6 weeks I was pretty hopeless, 6-12 was okay/day by day, and 12+ was hopefull and fun again.

  • Because I had nipples flatter than Kansas DD had plenty of latch issues in the beginning.  We ended up using a nipple shield, which she loved to rip off of my chest with her sneaky lil hands lol and man did that stink in the middle of the night!

At about 5-6 weeks I decided 'no more!' and weaned her off of it.  We still have some random issues, some were with supply when I went back to work, but since DD was 2 months I feel that I had finally caught the hang of it!  Now, even with her growth spurt going strong the past few days I'm calmer and less stressed when she drinks constantly on empty-feeling breasts.  Just try to relax and you'll be ok before you know it.

If it helps, the only time I left my house by 6 weeks was to go to work and I barely made it there with a shower longer than 2 minutes because DD nursed ALL the time still.

I got a really hang of it around 6-8 weeks (with the position etc). Hang in there! DD is 10 months now and I feel like a pro :)
