Non dairy ice cream?

I was just given an ice cream maker! And can't wait to try it, but my DH is lactose intolerant. Are there any recipes that you guys know of or use for ice cream makes without the cream? My thought for the milk was to use coconut milk. Thanks!

Re: Non dairy ice cream?

  • Mmm - I don't have a recipe, but can attest that store bought coconut milk ice cream is perfectly delicious, so I'm sure it would work.  Have you tried google?

  • Not yet. DH is at school with the laptop. I could google from my phone but I can't print from it :( Google is my friend for finding dairy substitutes and dairy free recipes :)

  • Oh, turns out it wasn't non dairy. But you could still probably make this recipe non dairy, so here's the recipe anywho.

  • Coconut milk ice cream is AMAZING. I highly recommend it.
  • Hmm avacado? I would try it, not sure if DH would, he might tho. He's pretty brave when it comes to food. So google says a variety of things. Some people just use coconut milk. Some pureed silken tofu. Plus there are some non dairy cream products. Looks like a trip to the health food store this weekend!

  • Mmm... I just googled and found quite a few.  If you want links:

several options (I don't know if they have coconut milk or not, as I haven't clicked, but some yummy sounding options!)

This one looks pretty similar to regular ice cream but w/ coconut milk.

What now? Coconut milk ice cream?  Being dairy free is killing my ice cream addiction.  I may have to try that. ;)
