Moms of Girls...cutting hair?

DH & I argue over this because S basically has a glorified mullet. I think if we trimmed it a little it would look a lot better but he thinks it?s ridiculous to cut her hair before she?s even two? when do you plan to give them their first haircut, or if it?s already happened, when was it?

Re: Moms of Girls...cutting hair?

  • Before 2?  That's silly.  I trimmed Katie's hair a long time ago and it looked really good.  It even things out and made her hair look thicker with less straggly ends.  I say go for it.

  • Sophia had her first hair cut at 9 months. It was just a trim because her bangs were getting so long.

I'd trim the mullet for sure.

  • I vote for trim the mullet!  DD got her first hair cut at 9 months, and now gets them periodically- otherwise she looks like a sheepdog.
  • DH and I JUST had this convo last night.

He asked me when we would cut her hair and jokingly replied, "NEVER!!"

I then told him, well maybe when we want to give her bangs...

He said, "Bangs? You aren't just born with them!?"

DH is so silly!!! I had to explain the whole process!

DD's hair is curry in the back and therfore is fine not to cut for awhile. The front I always sweep over each morning into a braid or ponytail and it works for now. So not for awhile!

My friends DD just got her FIRST haircut at 4yrs old! She too has curly hair though!

  • i am going to have to bite the bullet and get A's bangs trimmed soon because they are just way in her face and people are starting to threaten to put a bowl on her head and give her a trim. hee. we have started using more barrettes, but it's probably almost time.

  • That's what I think too, but he's pretty insistent about not cutting it...we'll see who wins. Smile

  • I trimmed DD1's bangs at 11 months, but after that she didn't get a real haircut until she was almost 3. After I finally had it done, though, I had wondered why I waited so long -- it looked so much better! Meanwhile poor DD2 is nowhere near ready for a haircut. lol.

If you think she needs it, go for it. There aren't any age requirements for haircuts!

  • Keira doesn't have much hair,so we haven't cut it yet.  I am on the don't cut it wagon.  LOL!  I don't know why but I really don't want to cut it.  I don't want her to have bangs either, so it will probably be a while before we cut it.

The only thing I'm nervous about is the top is short, so I'm not sure what all they could do. It's got a ton of different layers. I don't want her to end up looking like a boy. She looks SO cute when she lets me put them in pigtails or a ponytail, but at DC, the rubberband is out within the hour.

  • DD is just over 2.  I can't seem to get myself to cut her hair yet! I love her hair, although it is always in her face.  I try my best to keep it out of her face.  I go back and forth ...I am going to cut it ....no i'm not !!!

I say cut it, he can't do too much when the hair is laying on the floor! I'm surprised he has so many feelings wrapped up in her hair, a lot of guys wouldn't care.  Tell him that it will grow back so don't worry about it.  You don't have to go lopping it all of, just a trim...go about 1cm at a time and see how things look, stop if you have to.

  • DD had her first haircut at 9 months because she has SOOO much hair and it was constantly in her face.  She had her second hair cut just before her 12 month birthday.  and she's due for another one soon, LOL

  • Oh gosh, we never would have made it to 2.  I've been giving her little trims every month or so.  We're still sporting the mullet, but it's a groomed mullet.  I'm hoping eventually it will get something that can be pulled into a pony tail

  • Honestly I am too! He hates when I cut my hair too though, he likes long hair on girls/women though, so maybe that's it? Who knows..So you would do it yourself?? I would be kind of nervous about that.

  • DD has tons of hair, she had her first hair cut at 10 months old, and she goes every 6 weeks because it just grows like a weed. They just trim it so she doesnt have a mullet- we are trying to get it all to be one length then she can have a cute little suri cruise bob.

Even with cutting it so frequently I still have to use clips and bows to keep it out of her face. I cannot stand messy hair on kids- I like her hair to have a shape and not be all over the place.  I don't think it's a big deal to cut their hair before they are 2, all kids are different- some need more hair cuts then others- its hair it will grow back eventually if the hair cut is a disaster.

MY LO had her first when she was like 10 months old b/c her bangs were hanging in her eyes. After that cut I decided to grow her bangs out so no more haircuts for now. She had a mullet but now that her bangs are growing out it is starting to look better.

I've only cut her bangs because she won't wear clips in her hair.  We're letting the rest of it grow out.

  • By the time Allie was 1 her mullet hair was down to the middle of her back.  It looked completely ridiculous.  We got it cut to her shoulders and it looks great now, you can see her cute little cut below.  Smile
  • I haven't gotten DD's hair cut yet, and probably won't anytime soon. Her hair is curly in the back, straight in the front lol. I'm waiting for it to grow out longer so we can see how it looks and decide on a style. I definitely don't want to give her bangs, but she won't keep hair clips or ties in....it's a daily battle. Most of the time I just let her look like a hooligan. Who cares? She's just a toddler.

lol I don't know if it's to the middle of her back, I'd say it's right at her shoulders, but it's somewhat thin with a little bit of curl, so when up, it's cute, but when down it's downright ugly.

I took my daughter to my stylist just before her first birthday, but I trimmed her bangs around 9-10 months, because they were so long. When I took her to my stylist she trimmed her bangs and cut an even line in the back, so her hair looked like a short bob. I've had her trim it once since then, and I might have her trim it again when I get my hair cut next week. 2 seems like a long time to wait, but I guess it depends on how much hair your LO has.

  • As a Mom of two girls, i say cut it.  My girls have opposite type hair.  I had them both cut before they were one. Just trimmed but it helped with the mullet.  Plus I didn't want bangs so it helped have it grow in more even.  DD#2 has curly hair which makes it more difficult but having it trimmed every 3 months helps.  Now it looks cute and she is almost 2.

I say trim it, it'll grow faster - but I have boys so maybe my vote doesn't count Embarrassed

lol of course it does...but for some reason DH is more protective of her hair than I thought he would be...I assumed it was a girl thing. Smile

  • Charlotte has had 3 hair cuts...I think we need another one here in a few weeks. Her hair gets a little crazy and needs a trim to keep it looking nice! Besides, my hairdresser says you need to trim thier hair to get it growing!
  • I really didn't want to cut DD's hair yet but it too was a baby mullet. We had it cut at 19 months, into a little bob and I LOVE it. So glad we did it! It looks so much thicker and healthier now.

    I would say do it!

  • I trimmed DD1's hair as it came in..  She had really LONG pieces on top of her head , and peach fuzz everywhere else (around 1 year old) so I trimmed that a bit.  Then it started to grow in the back, so I trimmed that a bit until the rest of her head caught up...  Her first official hair cut wasn't until she was 2 but by then she had plenty of hair.  DD2 still is in the peach fuzz phase with a little extra in the back.

  • I wouldn't care how old she was.  If I thought she needed a hair cut, I'd give it to her.  Unfortunately? DD is bald. ;) Well, that's not entirely true... she's starting to get some curls.

  • We're getting family photos done in a week, so I'm taking both girls to get a haircut. It'll be DD2's first.

We cut DD1's hair at around 9 months because her bangs were uncontrollable and she had to hold her head at weird angles to be able to see around them. She got her first salon cut around 12 months because I suck at cutting bangs. :P

DD2's hair cowlicks out of her face in the front, and she lets us put barrettes in it a lot of the time, so it hasn't required a cut. But I would really like to neaten the ends up a bit before photos.

I think if you can convince DH that it won't do any harm to get it cut, he'll be impressed with how much tidier it looks with just nipping off the ends -- and it also will help her hair grow out evenly because everything is trimmed up. I hate the mullet-phase, and getting regular trims kept DD1's hair neat as it grew.

Allie was born with a head full of hair.  We still haven't cut it.  She's had a clip or hairbow in her hair since basically day 1.  I love it.  It's basically down to her butt now.  :)

It was tough to keep it out of her eyes, etc.  But I'm so glad we did, and didn't cut it.

  • Our plan is to cut DD's hair before her 2nd bday. It will probably just be a trim. Her hair really didn't start growing until she was 12 months.

Me and my mom cut DD's hair at about 6 months ourselves because her hair was completely uneven and matted.  She ended up with a little bob.  We then cut it around 1 year to give it some shape and then again at 18 months to get rid of her old baby hair which was straight and dried out looking at the bottom of her neck...the rest of her hair is curly.

  • We haven't cut it yet and don't have plans to do so yet. It's super curly all over so it just bounces up. Some pieces are longer than others but we clip it back on one side with a bow every day so it gets it out of her face. It seems to bother me more than her though. My Mom said she didn't trim my hair until it was down to my lower back! Not sure I'll wait that long with DD but it will be awhile I think...

  • We have not cut DD's hair yet.  I am waiting until the front is at least chin level to cut a cute bob.  I am anti-bangs, so I say let it go.

That's what I'm afraid of, her top isn't really very long, so I'm not sure how it'll look if it's all trimmed up. I know it's really not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things, but still.
