Babies: 0 - 3 Months

what "rules" have you broken

While pregnant I had all these things I would never do but they seem to go out the window once LO arrives. Seems like I do what works:

I said I'd never sleep with LO in bed with us, but he sleeps like a dream when he does and it seems to work for us.

I also said the in laws couldn't come right away when Cannon arrived but after coming home from the hospital I was exahusted and the in laws came for 4 days and my MIL stayed up with Cannon and did everything and we got to get much needed sleep and even had a date night. I was so glad I did because that is still the best sleep I've had since his arrival.

Re: what "rules" have you broken

  • I put LO in be with us too, usually after his 5am feeding. Thats the only way I can squeak out a few more hrs of sleep. I also leave LO on couch while I run to kitchen or upstair. Of course I always barricade him so he cant roll off.

  • i let him nap on his tummy. i can't bring myself to leave the couch that's right next to his PnP when he does this, but i NEVER thought i'd do it.

i also have a blanket and spare swaddle in the corner of his PnP. in the beginning i was terrified to have anything in there with him. i'm still like that with his crib for night sleeping, but i'm way less rigid for naps.

  • I let DS nap on his tummy as well, he hates being on his back but once he's on his tummy he falls right asleep. I always make sure I'm in the same room though, when he sleeps for the night he is on his back.

We've had him in the bed with us just a couple of times too, but not overnight. I'd wake up in the middle of the night and then bring him in.

  • Add me to the list of folks who will let DS nap on his tummy. He doesn't do it often (usually we swaddle him and put him on his back) and only if I'm going to be close by. He always sleeps swaddled on his back at night.

  • I learned with DS to never say never. Don't consider things you said you would never do before you had any experience "rules."  Congrats on figuring out and embracing what works best for your family!

  • she sleeps with a blanket at waist level, and i figured i'd never let her have one at all.  pedi suggested it after we mentioned that she seems to feel overwhelmed in her cradle or crib because of their size.  so now we tuck her in pretty well with the blanket under the mattress.

  • Can't say that I have ever had rules with DD.  I let her go everywhere with me, the whole family has held her sooooooooo many times without washing hands (bad me...), I've taken her out into the dirt with me for garden time, I've let H take a nap on the couch with her, we have to prop her up with a blanket because of reflux...lots of things that some people wouldnt do, I do.  And DD loves it :-}

  • I said no one could spend the night for the first few months, especially since MIL wanted to help
in the middle of the night. Um no, that's way to personal a time and DH doesn't even help so I'm good. Anyway, DH's bro and friend have spent the night in the first 2 months. Now I can't say no to MIL and FIL staying next month. She will not be helping me at night though. Also I'll be back to work so I'll get no break. Wah.

On a different note, I never thought I'd be one of those matchy matchy moms but I totally am, with big bows and flowers and everything. I love it!

  • I said I didn't want anyone but SO in the room when it came time to push. Both of our mom's were there, and I wouldn't have had it any other way.

I also said I'd never let DS become a "binky baby", but we do occasionally give him one. Usually he just spits it out after a minute or two.

  • She has slept on her tummy, took a pacifier in the hospital and ever since even though we're BFing, we've used a blanket in her PNP napper, and she's napped in bed with me. I'm sure there's a ton more but my brain is so tired...

  • No rules here! We do what makes us all happy and keeps us healthy. Of course safety is hugely important to us, but I'm a lot more laid back than I expected I'd be.

  • The only "rule" I break that I said I would never do is bedshare- it was the only way we could get him to sleep at night. We just started to try and transition to the crib again.

The other "rule" I break is letting LO sleep on his stomach. He rolls right to his tummy no matter how I lay him down and I don't correct him.

Edit: I didn't even know some of these things were rule! I guess I break more "rules" than I thought lol.

  • He naps on his tummy. I let him sleep on my chest if he wakes up before his next scheduled feeding. We used blankets in the bassinet when he was smaller. I still put one on him in the crib when he's tummy napping.

  • I judged my mom for bedsharing with us as babies and it's the best part of my day with LO now. I also let her nap on her tummy sometimes because she sleeps so much better (I'm in the room watching, of course) and I also gave her the binky before the 6-8 weeks I wanted to wait. She NEEDS that thing, if only to save the skin on her hands!

  • That I wouldn't call him any ridiculous nicknames. I can't help it though, I blame it on cute baby + lack of sleep = silly monikers. For example when I carry him to the changing pad I call him butter butt since his butt is so soft.

This! We just did yardwork yesterday and DD loved being outside. Also I didnt want her to use a binky, she has to have it to fall asleep. I use blankets to cover her, I let her in the bath with me sometimes, I bedshare, I will let her get away with watching TV if I absolutely need to get things done. Rules are made to be broken... No regrets here
