Planning a trip to the Roc Museum of Play- tips?

Any tips?  Unfortunately, we are going on Saturday.  UGH.  I went once about 10 years ago in college while I was babysitting for a weekend.  It was a holiday weekend and I took a 2 and 4 year old by myself and basically just barely "lived to tell about it".  LOL.  They had been there before and literally tried to run as soon as we got there.  Newb move.

Anyway, we are meeting my sister and BIL who live in Buffalo so they can see the kids in action.  My big fear is always the food allergies.  Bringing lunch and hoping kids aren't walking around eating pb&js!  Anything I should know?  Thanks!

  • If you get there right when it opens on a Saturday, it's not too bad. I've been there 2 Saturdays... one was fine, the other was crazy jam packed, so it just depends. The main lot might be full if you get there later.

You can't bring food into the museum, so you shouldn't encounter anyone walking around w/ peanuts!

The kids will have so much fun. There is a lot to do, so even if it is busy there will still be plenty of areas that aren't so crazy.

You can bring food, but you can't EAT food in the museum part. I always bring lunch and have it in the stroller while walking around the museum. I just didn't want you to think you couldn't bring food! =)

Be prepared to be there when they open, play for awhile and then sit for lunch. Try and eat before noon, that is when the food court gets busy. There are signs up saying you can't bring your own food into the food court. You still can, they won't say anything unless it is SUPER busy like a school break weekday. I asked security when I saw the sign and he told me the above.

When we go, we always play back to front. Kids tend to all hit Sesame Street upon entry....I go all the way in back to the Berenstain Bears and work forward. When your in the reading adventure area, there is a ramp for strollers to get to the second level up front by the mystery mansion part.

The train and carousel cost $1 to ride, parents ride free for kids 4 and under.

Have a great day! It is so much fun!

  • You should be relatively safe in the museum part for food allergies.  I didn't realize the no food rule the first time we were there and I started to give dd a piece of cheese and got yelled at very quickly.  They are definitely on watch out for food.

You can bring your own food though and eat at the tables without having to buy food there.

I no longer bring my stroller in.  Or the diaper bag....I leave that in the car.  They do have a coat room.  It is just easier for me to not be slowed down when chasing her around.  Bring your camera though!

  • Thanks so much!  Every little tip helps when you are taking little ones somewhere!  I appreciate it.  My sister and BIL never get to see the kids, so they are super excited.

Now I am just trying to decide if I should bring a stroller.  Mia walks all over, but I do like it to carry their stuff.

  • actually this time of the year a saturday might not be so bad. if it's nice most people will want to be outside if they don't have weddings, graduations and other parties to go to.

we were there last friday and i overheard a worker talking to another saying that May is one of the least crowded months, kids have exams and graduations etc.

  • Definately get there EARLY. For parking and so you don't have to wait forever!

Like PPs said, no food/drink in the museum, so you should be okay there!

    Have fun!

  • If only we didn't live 2.5ish hours away.  We are going to try to get their early though.  Thanks!
