Breastfeeding

Wine? Mad at myself...

I never drank during pregnancy or even when we were trying to get pregnant.  At the breastfeeding course that I took, however, they mentioned a glass here and there is perfectly fine when nursing.  When my little guy was a little over 2 weeks, I had a very small glass on Mother's Day after I fed him while eating.  I thought that you just had to wait at least an hour, but tonight, I read that it's a minimum of 2 or even 3 and that it can be hurtful to a very little one's liver (though I think that's if you drink regularly).  I waited about an hour-hour and a half before I nursed him that night.  I've been crying/beating myself up over this, and DH and my mom are trying to convince me that it's okay.  I feel like such an idiot or that I hurt his health at such a young age.  Am I overreacting?  I decided that I'm just not going to drink anymore while nursing.

  • Don't beat yourself up over it. Your lo will be just fine. Before I left the hospital when I had ds, the nurse told me that 1 glass is fine and to pump and dump if you drink anymore than that. You and you lo are just fine so no worries!

yes you're overreacting. it is definitely ok to have wine here and there. I do! I also think it's ok to not wait to feed, also (if you had a small amount of wine.) Relax.

  • I am 10000000000000% sure that it's nothing to be worried about.  Not only was it an extremely small amount that you drank, but you had it with dinner.  I'm pretty sure the drink and nurse rule is that if you're ok to drive you're ok to nurse.  Can't remember exactly what magazine I read that in...

  • I have a glass of wine at least twice a week and don't even pump and dump. doctor said it's absolutely fine.  If you're fine to drive, you're fine to nurse.  just don't over do it!  Pumping and dumping won't matter.

  • You are way overreacting. A glass of wine or even 2 is fine. You have not hurt your baby and you don't have to be so tough on yourself.

  • If you can drive you can BF.  Very little gets into your milk and it metabolizes just like it does in your blood.  I have had a drink while BFing.

When DS was two weeks old I did the same thing you did. I had a 5 ounce glass of wine (what a glass of wine is supposed to be to equal one serving) and then nursed DS about 1.5 hours later. Then I read all the books that say 2 to 3 hours and worried too.  But then I thought of the basics-like you metabolize one drink an hour. The amount of alcohol in your blood is still more than what is in your breastmilk.

There is a saying that if you can drive you can nurse (which is a bit liberal to me), but I really wouldn't worry too much. If the books didn't say 2 to 3 hours (because you know the authors assume that mom's are having more than 5 ounces) and then if something happened people would be out to sue. I think the 2 to 3 hour thing is overcautious.

  • American Academy of Pediatrics has found that if mom's BAC is less than 0.03, the minute amount of alcohol in her breastmilk has no affect on baby.  At slightly higher concentrations, baby may be more fussy or sleep less well.  Because of this, I feel comfortable having one drink and breastfeeding at any time after that.  In the one occasion I drank more than that, I pumped and dumped.  If you are worried, Milkscreen makes breast milk test strips that will tell you if your BM is safe for LO to drink.  You could have a drink and then test to reassure yourself.

  • Please don't beat yourself up!  He will be fine.  We've all had moments like that where we second guess ourselves.  I had a glass of champagne and she woke up about 30 minutes later and wanted to nurse.  She was only a couple of weeks old.  Everything is fine.

They are a lot stronger then they seem. And the internet is full of a lot of guilt-loading crap.  You'll find other resources that say that only 2% of the alcohol you consume reachs the baby.  With passing time, that would decrease as your body metabolizes the alcohol. So, at most, 2% of your small glass of wine might have reached LO.

  • Waking up to these responses really helped me out.  Thank you.  I am normally SO cautious, so I was beating myself up over this information of 2-3 hours.  I'll calm down.  Thanks!

  • I definitely enjoy a glass of wine or a beer now and then and don't worry about pumping and dumping.

The only thing I will say is that I get SO dehydrated and hungover now that it's not even enjoyable to drink more than 1-2 drinks. I won't even be drunk, but something about the way it metabolizes now or something just makes me feel likeshit.

  • It's ok to have an occasional glass of wine...if you are really worried though you can get the milkscreen test strips.  I have found them at target and BRU.
