XP: Car seat positioning for two

DD will be just a few weeks shy of two when DS is born in a few weeks. I'm trying to figure out the best car seat positioning. We have a 2010 Toyota Rav4. DD is in a Britax Boulevard RF and he'll be in an infant carrier. Should I put her RF behind passenger seat and him in the middle if it fits? If I can't put him in the middle then who do I put on which side or does it matter? Just want to make sure they're both as safe as possible. Sorry if this has been asked before. I googled...lots of diff answers.

  • If they're both RF, they're both equally safe in either outboard position. If you can safely install the infant seat in the middle and your DD is still rear-facing, I'd go for that as the infant is the most fragile of the two and he would be most protected in the middle. If you turn your DD forward-facing however, put her in the middle and leave the baby outboard as the middle seat is statistically safer and any child who is RF, regardless of age, is more protected than a child who is FF. HTH.

  • Thank you so much! Smile Kind of along the lines of what I was thinking but I kept questioning myself.

This! I have a 02 Honda Civic and thought there would be no way to have both seats RF in my tiny car BUT we went to a car seat installation clinic (for free) and they installed both RF without issues!

  • I have a 2010 Rav4 as well, and also have a Boulevard and Graco Safeseat. It would not fit to have a car seat in the middle and one on the side for us (had it installed by Certified Car Seat tech). So they are both outboard.

ETA: DH has a Tundra, and in his truck we have DS in the center, and DD behind the passenger. It doesn't work well, and we are going to have to put DS behind DH, because he is constantly poking at DD, squeezing her hands, etc. So unless your toddler listens much better than mine, this is also something to consider.
