pendleton IN?

mh is thinking of interviewing for a job up there. he told me indianapolis but this looks to be an hour away...i know nothing about indy & don't mean to offend but it seems to me that an hour away is probably pretty suburban/ borderline rural? do a lot of people live in between indy & there? if so, any specific areas that are nice/good schools/nice homes/etc? just for looking around online & stuff to check out.

any insight would be great. I am trying to be supportive if he goes this route but we're northeasterners and I like the conveniences of urban areas so I'm having trouble wrapping my head around an area I don't know at all.

thanks!

I grew up in the Geist/Fortville area just west of Pendleton. Pendleton is a very cute little town with a great school system. It also has some restaurants and grocery stores. You are only 20 minutes away from Fishers and Noblesville which have anything you could ever need and only 40 minutes from downtown Indianapolis. If DH chose a job in Pendleton you could easily live in the city west of Pendleton or in a more suburban area.

  • Ditto PP.  Pendleton isn't far from Fishers, Noblesville, etc., which are all good-sized suburbs of Indy with lots of shopping and dining options.  To get downtown you might be 45 minutes away.  If you're from the Northeast, you probably will find it very different.  I would definitely recommend a trip here if the interviewing progresses to see if it's somewhere you'd want to live.  It's a nice community with a great cost of living.  If you own a house now and can sell it, you'll probably be amazed at what you can buy (depending on your current area I guess).

Thanks! Actually we live in Charlotte NC now for a few years but still have Northeast mentality and enjoy the warm weather here but I really miss the feel of the larger metro areas in the NE & was hoping if we had to go back to cold weather, it would be to a larger area or closer to family, kwim? So I think the COL and size are probably not too different from CLT, I am just not sure about culturally what it is like there? Are there are a lot of transplants from all over or is it mostly people from the general area?

Hmmm...that might be a tough one to answer, but I'll try from my own personal perspective.  It seems like a lot of people in our age group (25-35) who we've encountered are mainly transplants of small town Indiana.  They moved to Indy after college because of jobs and a bigger social network as opposed to moving back to their small hometowns.  Maybe that's just my friends though, you know?

As far as big cities go, I've always heard people say that Indy is fairly conservative in comparison.  I live in Denver now (but haven't for long), and it's definitely a different feel.  I don't think those are fair comparisons though.  I'm from small town Illinois and Indiana originally, so these are the only big cities I've lived in.

I think you will find what you seek.  For example, we went to a big Methodist church downtown that was very culturally and politically diverse.  There were many people there who we wouldn't normally have encountered through our jobs (we're accountants) and social circles.  There are definitely pockets of diversity in Indianapolis if you want to find them.

  • Thanks for the insight...!

I tend to be a bleeding heart liberal so that is part of my concern & I don't have much tolerance for intolerance if that makes any sense :) (sounds way hypocritical, eh? lol) . But I agree with you about finding what you seek- I work in a field that tends to be made up of people similar to myself so that helps, but socially even here in NC where everyone has moved from elsewhere, we have found challenges with some of the cultural type issues.

I can be adaptable, I just need to know what I'm in for ;). We'll see what happens!

I have heard awesome things about Denver, hope it is a good fit for you!!!!

Ditto this. We live in Geist/McCordsville.

  • oh and pendelton is a pretty small town with lots of locals.  very small town feel.  if DH does not mind a bit of a drive (25-30 minutes) in not much traffic I would consider looking for housing in Geist, McCordsville or Fishers.

  • I am a foreigner married to a local Pendleton man and live in Pendleton. I cannot say enough good things about it! I love the small town feel and there is plenty for families to do. The local community is amazing and so supportive. We also commute to Indy which is 20-30 minutes away and do not mind one bit. I love it here! PM me if you decide to move!
