What are your child care plans when baby comes?/Daycare Q?

What do you guys plan to do? Right now were looking at the SAHM route for at least the first year....

For those that have looked at daycare- how much is it monthly and what area are you in? Also what hours is the daycare? Where do you live??

Re: What are your child care plans when baby comes?/Daycare Q?

  • Full time infant day care where I live is around $ 300-500 a week. We will be having a family member watch the new baby as that's more than I make a week and I an mostly working for fun money, debt reduction and in case we have to pay private school tuition next year for E.

  • I was shocked when I started researching daycares in my area.  Not only was I late in the game (and this was in Early April), but the average weekly cost is between $150-175 for newborn care.  On top of that...the available spaces are few and far between.  The chances get better the older they get.

I put LO on a waiting list for December, but the chances are slim that he will get in.  I don't know what I am going to do.

Good luck with your search.  I hope that you are able stay home with your LO for a while.  I wish I was going to be able to...

  • Here is our planned schedule:

    Monday:  My mom watches him

Tuesday-Thursday:  DH watches him (he works 4 10-hour days, and has those days off)

Friday: Daycare by the woman who watched DH growing up/watched all the kids in DH's family.

  • We're really hoping that I can become a SAHM and not return to work after my maternity leave is up. If we feel that I need to return once the time comes, we'll be placing Mason in daycare for about $155/week. We live just south of Atlanta.

  • We are taking our little one to an in home day care. It will be $130 per week. If there are days when we don't take LO, we don't pay. That was a major deciding factor for us since most daycares charge even when children aren't there. I refused to pay for 2 1/2 months in the summer and other holidays when I am off from work just to hold a spot.

  • I only get 2 months maternity leave, but it seems like my boss is going to let me extend it to 3. At that point, the baby will hopefully have gotten into daycare. I live in the Boston area and most of the wait lists around here are 1 year for an infant. Which means that even though I got on the wait lists when I was only 4 weeks pregnant, I might not get a spot. We are on 6 wait lists and keeping our fingers crossed that we get off of one!

Most of the day cares around here are pretty long hours, like 7-6, to accommodate all of the workaholic parents.  MH and I are going to try to coordinate so that the baby isn't there for much more than 7 hours though. Daycare costs around $2000 a month.

  • We are trying to figure it out but I think our most likely route will be a home daycare. Some around here will watch for as low as $20-25 a week. If at all possible, we would like for DH to be able to quit one of his jobs and just work nights. I usually am off by 1 during the week anyway, so it won't be that bad.
  • MIL will watch baby on Mondays & Fridays all day

FIL will watch Tues-Thurs until 1:30 when MIL gets home

    MIL will watch Tues-Thurs afternoons

MIL & FIL are retired and live 5 minutes away so it is convenient. I am grateful to them for offering to do this!

  • I plan to take off 5-6 months.

I am on 4 waiting lists for daycares. Average wait time is 12 - 18 months. Got on before I was pregnant. Daycare rates are about 1800 a month.

  • DH works from home on Mondays and Fridays and in the beginning we're going to line up our FMLA back-to-back to hopefully get LO on a schedule before both of us are back to work full-time. I know, I know, wishful thinking. We will most likely end up looking into a PT nanny for Mondays and Fridays since it's doubtful that DH can be fully available for work and fully available for an infant.

There's a new daycare center opening up this fall at DH's work, so we are entering ourselves in the lottery for a placement there Tuesday - Thursday. I would love to WFH full time, but it's just not feasible in my current position and SAH is definitely not in the financial cards for us.

  • Right now my 3yr old DS is in daycare for kids 1yr+. It is only $115 per week which is a steal (she is home daycare; Wisconsin State licensed). But the downfall is she won't take babies so I would have to either pull DS out of a daycare he likes and have them go somewhere new or have one go one place and one go another. Some of the centers around here are $150+ per week. We've basically decided that I'll probably SAH; after gas money and paying for two kids in daycare, it wouldn't be worth my time to work. I have a PT work at home job being a project manager for a graphic designer if I want it so I'll probably go that route.

  • My mat leave is 1 year, and then after that we'll use daycare.

We have a provincial $7/day program (Quebec), but those are really hard to get in to (I'm already on about 40 lists), so for the first few years it will likely be a home daycare.  The going rate is around $35/day for those, but at the end of the tax year we'll get a refund that will make it work out to about $15/day.

Very lucky to live where we do when it comes to daycare!

  • I'm trying really hard to finish my Ph.D. before this baby comes.  I hope to at least get all the data collection finished by October.  So, I could be writing and defending in the spring.  Regardless, we plan on me probably staying home for the first six months and then will reevaluate the situation to see how the job market is doing and whether I will go back to work.

  • Baby will go to daycare after my 12 weeks of FMLA time are up. Daycares in my immediate area are $180-$225 per week but that varies by township (lots of variability in my vicinity).

The daycare that I chose is $190 a week, which is a screaming deal considering how much I liked it and how nice it was. This place wouldn't discuss tuition over the phone but I went to see it anyway and it was so much nicer than the other places I had seen and I was expecting it to be a lot more money, but it was cheaper! I found out it's a not-for-profit. Happy day!

    Good luck!

  • The average cost for twins in daycare in my area is about $1700 a month. I have found two that are $1300+ a month. I am on those waiting lists. I was freaking out at the cost of 2 at one time until I see some areas pay that for ONE!

I had DD in one of the more expensive day cares and it was $900 a month. No way I could afford $1800+ a month now! I have had to lower my standards a little and remind myself that as long as they are taken care of in a safe place that is all that matters...

  • We are in Chicago. Looking at around $1800-$2000/month at a daycare facility or maybe around $1500-$1800 for a nanny share. Worth looking for a great nanny, but tough to find a couple who you feel comfortable enough doing a share with!

  • We are going to an in-home daycare and she charges $180/week for 5 days, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. are her hours. I have been told by colleagues at work that this is very affordable, so I'm not sure what the average is in our area. We live about 45 minutes north of Boston.

  • I will be a SAHM. I honestly can't even imagine having someone else care for my baby 40+ hours a week. We are changing our lifestyle so that we will be able to afford this.
  • SAHM. Day care was never an option for us as I could not make pick up time with my schedule. It starts at $1300/month here. We looked into nannies but at $52K a year, it was prohibitively expensive.

Yikes! You're basically working to pay another person's salary. So crazy.

We still go back and forth. DH wants me to stay at home and while I do want to for at least the first 6 months to a year, I do hope to return to work eventually.
