So clueless- my poor boy has been constipated

He has been having pebble like poops for so long now that I started to think that must be normal.  If you do prune juice, how to you give it- in a sippy?  How much?  Any other favorite remedies?

  • Our pedi gave the go ahead to use Milk of Magnesia when we introduced table foods at 6 months.  It's gentle but does the job.

  • DS gets watered down apple or pear juice in a sippy almost daily to keep things moving.

  • I alternate pears and peaches daily to keep everything moving for DD.  Check out the "Do you give LO Juice" thread below as well as there are many tips for constipation in that thread as well.
  • I give our DS prunes and pears, as well as very watered down apple juice.

When DD was on formula she would get a sippy of 1/2 water 1/2 prune juice. Worked like a charm!

Our pedi said this too. We have also made dietary changes. Give prunes, pears, peaches, apricots, and raisins often. Try to limit apples (applesauce), bananas, and carrots. www.wholesomebabyfood.com has really good guidelines for dietary changes to treat/prevent constipation.

  • We have done a touch of prune juice in her milk. Also, a warm bath can sometimes relax the muscles and help the process...good luck!
  • We give about 2 oz of apple juice in a sippy each day to prevent constipation. That's usually enough. I found that works better than the prune. While pregnant, I had some constipation issues and I personally found a glass of apple juice worked better than half a glass of prune juice, and tasted WAY better.

  • Also can sprinkle benifiber (tasteless) into a sippy or bottle.

I do about 1oz prune to 3oz water but when DD was really constipated (severe) I gave her it straight and  she had explosive up her back poo... It worked a little too well.
