2nd Trimester

Scoliosis-first pregnancy

I have moderate scoliosis (40 degree S curve) and am nervous about how my body will handle carrying the extra weight toward the end of my pregnancy. I'm afraid I could have lots of pain and discomfort. I don't have short-term disability. I want to do everything possible to prepare my body for the challange ahead. Anyone with a similar struggle who's been pregnant with moderate scoliosis? If so, how bad is your curve? How did you prepare? Cope? Tips? Thanks!

Re: Scoliosis-first pregnancy

  • I have scolisis but I'm not sure on how bad the curve is. I haven't really had any back problems except for when I wake up in the morning, my upper back is sore like I need a massage but it goes away after I get up and moving. I'm also curious to see how my back handles the extra weight. I plan on trying to get a massage soon and then maybe another when I am in the 3rd trimester just to feel better.

Also, my cousin's wife had scoliosis and she didn't have any problems with her back during her pregnancy and she gained 60lbs. Hoepfully you should be fine as long as you slowly gain weight. Good luck and don't worry.

  • My case is very mild, 21 on the curve but I go to the chiropractor on a regular basis.  Usually once a week but sometimes more if I am feeling any discomfort.  I really thing they do great things with their hands.

    Good luck!

  • i have a pretty severe S curve and I have had 2 children already this is my 3rd. Never a problem with any of them with back pain...little twinges here and there but otherwise fine. With 1st i was recommended to get an anesthesia consult beforehand because of the scoliosis to see if i was eligible for an epidural...i was fine with epidural with both!!! So i think you are in the clear..no worries. I worked up until the day before i delivered with my 2nd child!

  • Were you able to give birth naturally?  I have a mild curve and I've been warned that I'll probably be pushed towards a c-section.  I've been very nervous about this!
