Anyone waiting longer than 6 mo. to introduce solids?

As we get closer to the 6 month mark, I am wondering when I want to start the kid on solids. I am anxious and he certainly seems interested. At the same time I kind of want to prolong this time of EBFing. I've heard conflicting information on this. On one side I heard iron levels can start depleting at 6mo. without solids...but then I heard that BM has everything they need for at least the first year of their lives.

What are you doing? Any thoughts?

I waited until 6 months to start solids. And yes, breast milk or formula should be their main "food" for the first 12-months. If you start with rice cereals; they have iron in it, so you don't have to take additional supplement for it. I started with cereals, and then I just started trying out all kinds of veggies and fruits starting with the orange/yellow, and then green (all of the leafy green veggies have iron in it, which is the route I took since I didn't do the supplement), and went with meat, egg yolks, fish around 8 months (I make my own baby food).

  • I'm going to introduce solids around 6 mo. just for playing with flavors.  DD won't be getting it too often for quite a while.  I just want to expand her pallet lol

DD is 6 months today. We aren't seeing the pedi to even discuss solids for 2 more weeks.  DD is in the 95th percentile for weight and height, eats well but seems satisfied after feeding and sleeps through the night.  So I don't see a rush in starting solids.  She is starting to show some interest in what we have in front of us at dinner.  We put her in a high chair and let her play with toys while we eat to get used to the routine of eating together.  She loves it.  I know the pedi wants to start with cereal, but I am looking at baby led weaning.  I am just going to listen to what the pedi has to say and do what I feel is best for my LO.

  • Maybe look into baby led weaning or blw.  You may feel more confident with that.

I started 1 meal a day at 6 months, 2 meals and 7 months and 3 meals at 8 months and this worked well for my little one.  At first he only ate a tablespoon of food at a time, but he quickly liked it and started eating more and more at each meal.
