Does anyone tutor out of their home?

I'm a new SAHM who is thinking about tutoring out of my home.

I have a degree in Early Childhood Education and a minor in Math & English.  Has anyone out there tutored in the past or currently tutoring?  What are your rates?  Do you have any tips that you can offer or suggestions on what resources I should look into getting?

Thanks!

  • One thing I would suggest is to tutor in a library or something else instead of out of your home you could do it after DH is home for teh night. I am a teacher and have several friends that tutor, but all do it at their customers houses or somewhere else.

  • I tutor/tutored English and SAT/college essay prep since before I was a SAHM.  I use some of my teaching contacts to find students to tutor, word of mouth, and I have advertised on CL.

I currently just tutor one student b/c I'm really busy. I charge $35/hour, and I travel to their house -- which is what I always do. I have two rowdy kids -- it's like a vacation to go to someone's quiet house and work on reading & writing!

  • I am a former middle school teacher and have tutored in the past.  I always go to the student's home.  It's much easier for me and a lot less of a liability (you never know since there are crazies out there).  I charged 25-30 an hour depending on how far of a drive it was for me.  It is a nice break and very rewarding to see progress if you can get the parents on board to keep track of any outside work you might assign.  The summer is a great time to start.  Good luck!
