Need advice: How long to CIO at naps at 12 months?

How long do you think is a good amount of time to leave a one year old in the crib for when she wakes up crying from a nap? For example, sometimes my daughter wakes up after an hour and she is still laying in her crib (as opposed to standing and looking for me) and crying. Do I let her cry a bit or get her up? For how long? She is a bad napper and is mostly down to 1 nap a day. I usually go in and get her if its been at least an hour but I'm thinking she needs longer naps.  What do you think?

  • At 12 months, I'd say she definitely needs a longer nap if it's her only nap.  It could easily be 2-3 hours.  So if she fusses for awhile after about an hour (but isn't up and babbling, etc), I'd probably give her at least 10-15 minutes of that to see if she settles back down.  If that doesn't work, I'd probably try adjusting her nap time (earlier?) and/or her bedtime to see if you can get her to take longer naps.

  • Have you tried playing music in her room while she sleep?  We use the Baby Einstein Lullabye CD for the kids' nap time, and I think it helps them sleep.  Is it too bright in her room?  I am really surprised she only takes a 1 hr nap, how is she for the rest of the day, does she seem crabby and tired?  I have an in-home daycare and my 2-4 yr olds all take 1 nap for 3 hours, and usually I have to wake them up.

  • Just from my reading, if it's nap time, and your LO cries for more than 30 minutes, naptime is over.  Ferber recommends just skipping the nap for the day (yes, dealing with a cranky kid sucks), but then bedtime goes GREAT!  And, then trying again tomorrow.  Same time constraints apply everyday.

Yeah, DD never went back down for a nap once she was up and crying.

My DD used to do this a LOT.  I can't remember for sure but I think she was around 18 months.  She would wake up exactly 50 mins after going to sleep.  It was 50 minutes every single time- weird!  She would be really crying so the first few times I went and got her but then she started doing it every day so I let her CIO and she went back to sleep after 10-15 minutes.

About a week ago DS started doing this and it was after 50 minutes too!!  I let him cry and he was back asleep in 15 minutes.  For him, he had missed his am nap so I think he was just orvertired.
