Braxton Hicks supposed to be painless?

So let me start by saying I had a busy weekend

Friday: saw Cats in SF and returned home just after midnight

Saturday: Woke up early, bridal shower gift shopping, then a bridal shower at noon. Came home took about a 45 minute nap and then got ready for a six pm bachelorette party. Was out till two Sunday morning.

So on my drive home to rest between the bridal shower and bachelorette party, I was getting several sharp pains from the top of my abdomen to the bottom. I went to lay down and they subsided over the course of my nap.

Sunday I wake up and get in the shower to get ready for grocery shopping. My whole stomach gets hard and I get this clenching feeling and can't stand up straight. This happens a few times so I decide to lay down. Since then I've been crampy but nothing too bad.

I called the doc and he said unless anything becomes regular to not worry too much and then cautioned me against going out and about so much.

Here is my questions:

Was the clenching feeling BH or was it the shooting sharp pains ? Also, I was told BH were not painful, what gives?

And yes...I have had a baby before so I know I should know these things but I never experienced BH with dd#1 AND dd#1 was 12 years ago which feels like a lifetime.

TIA!

Re: Braxton Hicks supposed to be painless?

  • I am at 32 weeks and on my first baby but... My Brackston Hicks have been accompanied by pain. Mostly crampy kinda pain, none the less they have not been fun. I also have rediculous amounts of sharp to dull pain on my sides with or with out the BH, I think its just round ligament pain. I am trying to hold out until Friday when I have my apt to tell my Doc whats going on.

One thing that I have read about BH is that staying well hydrated should help with them  if switching positions or walking a little does not do the drink. I drink PLENTY of water every day and so far i have not noticed a difference, but maybe it will help you.

I am no expert but, every body is differnt and every pregnancy is different. Maybe since your first baby you have more pain receptors in that area and it makes things more difficult.

Good luck hope you feel better.

  • Yes and no.  They hurt me sometimes and sometimes just uncomfortable.
  • From what I know...(which isnt all that much) Braxton Hicks can be painful...they can be like real contrax but as long as there isnt a pattern its all good

  • When I noticed I was having them, they were painful for me. Like menstrual cramps that came and went. At times they even fell into a pattern, which was a bit unnerving, but they'd always go away if I took it easy for awhile or just went to bed. My OB started doing cervical checks early because I was having it so often and so early...I think mine started around 20 weeks.

BH can be painful, so can round ligament pain.  Both can kick in when you've overdone it.  Since they went away when you changed positions, then they aren't labor contractions.  On days like that, you might consider making sure you're very well hydrated and get rest.  You could also have your partner assist you in doing a diaphragmatic release.  I can't find the right video of that on youtube (something to do when I get time!), but here's a decent description of how to do it (ignore the thing about posterior babies -  your goal would be just to release those muscles for now)
  • Thank you ladies for all of the info, I really appreciate it! You have all been amazing helping me get through the ins and outs of pregnancy
