judge me

Kiah has a TV in her room! Gets great grades. Swims 3-4 days a week. Plays outside. Reads at least 30-60 min a day. And is one amazing, amazing kid! She does not get cable but is allowed to watch movies in there when she wants to have time to her self. I think she is going to turn out okay, even with a TV in her room.

Re: judge me

  • no judging here.  Everyone makes parenting choices that work for them.

  • Most of us don't have kids that are her age.... I think that's why most of us don't have tv's in our kids' rooms... preschoolers usually don't watch tv in bed.  ;)

I think if your kid is doing what they need to be doing, they can have privileges like their own cell phone or a tv in their room or whatever.... it's the kids who are failing out of school who also just slack in front of a tv with no one paying attention to them that are problems.

  • I am kidding, I don't care if you judge! To be perfectly honest she never asks to watch it.
  • Judge judge judge!  Just kidding - you are doing an awesome job as a mom and you made a call that fits your family.  No one could have heartburn with that!

  • No judging here, either!  I got A's and B's, did my homework and studied in front of the tv, and was a generally good kid.  I never did well when my mom would insist on turning off my tv or having me study quietly in the dining room.  I'd fall asleep or lose focus.  It was like the white noise helped.

  • Oh I am SO judging you. Stick out tongue Ha! Never ever, lady. You are an awesome mom, and you do what works for your kid. I do plenty of stuff that other people probably roll their eyes at. You have great kids and they'll turn out just fine, TV or no TV. Big Smile

    A dinglehopper?  Okay, Scuttle ;)

  • Dinglehos are great you eat with them or brush your hair.

Edit- dinglehoppers but I think I like Dinglehos better!

  • Well I'm the mom that has a preschooler with a tv in his room... so obviously there is no hate coming from this direction.  We have always been very casual with the tv here and honestly I feel like because we are he really doesn't see it as something he NEEDS to do.  He never turns it on himself (though he knows how) and really the only time he watches tv is in the mornings eating breakfast or after school since he doesn't nap anymore but its always out in the other room.  He watches the tv in his room when he is sick or if I need him to wake up from a nap and he won't then I turn it on to wake him up.  He does have a basic cable box in his room, and I'm quite sure before long there will also be an xbox in his room since there is one in both the family room and living room.

  • DD1 is the same way. I also let her keep the living room TV on in the background while she is doing homework. She has straight A's, is in 7th grade and taking high school math classes, and always has her homework done without me even asking, it works for her so we go with it.

For the longest time it was a battle with my DH because he can't work with noise or distractions so he thought that she should do homework at a quiet desk.  I personally can't work in complete quiet and have always done better with background noise so I understand her learning style.

This!  Kiah is clearly an incredible kid - responsible, active, bright and loving.  You must be doing something right!  Smile
