NBR: Sam's Club Membership

Is it worth it? I hear that baby food is really cheap and other foods are a good deal?

Thoughts?

Re: NBR: Sam's Club Membership

  • We get the money back for our mambership in bottled water alone. We drink A LOT of bottled water. We also buy our laundry supplies there, TP and papertowels as well as some snack foods like granola bars and such. We don't buy much food there only because it's in large quantities and it's just the 2 of us. I am going to check out their prices on diapers and stuff once we get closer to needing those things.

They also have good prices on sheet cakes for birthdays and such as well as veggie and fruit trays which aren't things you would buy often, but they are priced right when the need comes around.

  • Some items are a better deal at Sam's.  But if items are on sale at the grocery and you have a coupon, Sam's is not better.  We buy diapers there, unless we have a great coupon for the grocery.  We also buy our dog food there and almost all of our health items (lotions, soaps, etc).  Plus they carry some Carter's items for about $5.50!

Over the course of a year, I think you'd definitely get your money?s worth.

We buy quite a few staple grocery items and laundry and paper products there.  Every once in awhile I price compare with Kroger and Sams is still a better deal.  Pampers are cheaper on amazon though.

  • We went to Coso and Sams and bought the Sams membership.  For diapers it is a good deal, but not as good as Amazon.

Formula is cheaper for us! By A LOT!!!

We buy toilet paper, cat food, cat litter, paper towels, cokes, some frozen foods, and they have really good meat selections at times!  We buy that in bulk, cut it down to portions and freeze.

I never bought babyfood so I can't speak for that.  They sometimes have good deals are certain clothes as well.  Televisions and computers sometimes are good deals as well.

We certainly make back our yearly fee and think it is worth it.

For this reason alone, we are considering getting a membership when the baby is born.  BFing didn't go so well last time and I only made it to 5 months before I had to FF.  My mom was nice and stocked us up on Sam's formula when she was in town.  It is WAY cheaper!

you know how much cheaper and is it like a specific name brand? We use similac right now

  • We don't use it enough for me to justify having it. They never carried the items we used.

Side note If you get a "business" membership it's only $35/year vs. the personal membership which is like $100 something. We put our Sam's card in DH's landscape business' name.

All you have to do is show a business card in order to get the business memebership. . . .I'm hinting at nothing . . . .

I can't give you an exact dollar amount since it was like 3 years ago, but we were using Enfamil and my dr recommended we try switching to the Sam's brand formula to save cash.  The Sams brand formula comes in a can twice the size of a regular large can of formula for the SAME price!  So, if a regular can of formula is around $22, the sams brand is twice the size for $22!  Its insane!

  • They have a limited variety of baby food and diapers.  If your baby likes the variety they sell, then it's great because the prices are definitely good on it.  We saved some money buying mum-mums and wipes there.  Wipes are really cheap.

We've had a Sam's Club membership for years, but we didn't buy that much stuff for babies there.  We typically buy TP, paper towels, kleenex, chicken nuggets, and bottled water on every trip and we buy other things at random times.  Vitamins, soap, shaving cream, coffee are all cheap there too.  I have found that it does pay to compare prices, though -- there are some things that are not cheaper.  Don't buy into the mentality that if they sell it at Sam's, it must be cheaper.  It's true for a lot of things, but definitely not everything.

Yeah I just saw that online, price is good, but target brand is just as cheap... so not sure I would go there for that...

sisterkate- yeah I have heard that as well. C loves food period, so I am sure she will like whatever they have there... she eats everything no problems.

  • We think its worth it-- we buy all paper products there (TP, paper towels, paper plates, napkins, etc.) We also get trash bags, some frozen items, baby wipes, puffs, and other random food like condiments.

We also use it A LOT for entertaining-- they have great prepared foods (pre-made bruschetta, different dips, etc.) We also like that you can get stuff like frozen quiche, good bread, and meats for a really decent price. Just hosting 2 large family bbq's a year definitely makes the membership fee worth it.

  • We use Similac Advance.  The 2.14lb pack is $25 and you can use the $5 or $10 off checks (ONLY checks) as well.

We have managed to get it everytime for $20 basically.

That gives you well over 144 oz if I remember correctly.  For that reason alone we can justify the price.  And our renewal was $60 and we don't have the business version (not sure how we got it)....

Anyway, hope that helps!! You can always go and tell them you want a one day pass and they will let you shop or at least browse for no cost.

  • I've had mine for several years.  If nothing else, I keep it for the gas discount.  I got gas there tonight for $3.79--cheaper than anywhere else I saw.  I also get Logan books there.  They have some good deals on children's books.  I also like to buy oatmeal, dishwasher tabs, TP, and paper towels there.

We have one b/c of dh's business.  He is able to use some of their services (eg, web hosting) for cheap through them.  For $100/year, he's able to process credit cards via his website, which is way cheaper than anywhere else.  (I believe he still pays a processing fee, but I don't keep his books).

Anyway, ditto pp with the gas- just for that savings alone, it's often worth it.  At the Sam's near my IL's, I often save 20 cents/gallon or more on gas.  As for groceries, definitely price compare and know the prices as they do change.  At one point, dh and I went through and made a list of the price and # of ounces in many of the items we'd buy there....  we compared it to Meijer/Kroger just to get a sense of how much each place cost.  Sam's was cheaper on a lot of things per ounce, but it depends on what it is.  We did this before DS arrived...

On the flip side, if you use Pampers for diapers, Amazon subscribe and save is definitely the cheapest.

We've had one for several years and already get back our membership costs with what we buy for ourselves. With the baby coming along I know it will be even more worth it.

The prices on flowers, bakery items, office/home items, items for the baby, bathroom items, etc are all good and well worth it.

  • Just so happens I posted about a deal Sam's Club is running on my website yesterday. From now until June 5 you can pay $10 for a 10 week Sam's Club Membership. This will allow you to at least check it out and get to know their prices and if it's worth it for your family!

  • We also have a Sam's membership and I do think it's worth it! Just a note about the Sam's brand formula though, it has a greater amount of some kind of oil that can give your LO tummy issues. We switched M to the Sam's brand and she had major issues, went back to Similac and she was fine. I know it depends on your LO but it can happen. Still cheaper and more for your buck even on the Similac! Smile
