WWYD? EBM during a business trip

OK, for those of you who don't know my situation... Mia is 16 months old, and nurses AM/PM. When I travel on business, I pump to replace the nursing sessions and bring it home to freeze, so DH will have breastmilk to give her on my next trip.

Back home, DH has always given Mia bottles in place of the nursing sessions. This is mostly a holdover from when she didn't drink "real" milk, and it was really important to conserve every drop of my very limited freezer stash -- she drinks more from a bottle than from a sippy.

She's now perfectly happy with real milk (well... soy milk), so I'm less concerned if a little breastmilk goes to waste. Do you think DH should give her a sippy of breastmilk AM/PM, rather than a bottle? She never gets a bottle when I'm home, so I'm not real worried about her being super-attached to it, but it would be nice to be done with it and not have to worry about that.

While we're at it, what about getting rid of EBM completely? I know I'd still need to pump, but pumping and dumping would be easier than bringing it home. And honestly, I'm ready for her to wean completely, so maybe avoiding EBM during my trips would nudge her in that direction.

What to do... what to do...? Smile

  • If you're thinking of weaning her anyways, I would do 2 things:

    1) Start having DH give her the sippy instead of a bottle.

    2) When you're on business, start cutting out a pumping session.  I started by taking out the morning (nursing) session, then cut out the night time one.  I'd already ditched the ones during the day.  I didn't have any engorgement or leaking problems.

  • I'd just start using the up the frozen stash via a sippy cup so you can pack away the bottles. As for what to do on the road - I don't think mentally I could dump it if I didn't have to, so I'd continue to bring it home until I was done pumping.
  • I'd definitely move to the sippy.  And if you are ready to wean, then i would move her to the soy milk when you are gone.
  • When DD went down to 2 sessions a day, we found that she didn't need any EBM while I was gone.  I was practicing "Don't ask, don't refuse" after her birthday, and when I'm not around at typical nursing times she doesn't ask.

We're down to 1 session a day now, and I don't get engorged when we miss it, so I don't even take a pump when I travel anymore.  I was only getting a few ounces anyway, and it is one less thing to deal with!
