We will need to use DD's crib for baby #2 and are considering bunkbeds....just curious if there's any difference in transitioning straight to the bunkbed, versus just a regular twin versus a true toddler bed...
we have 3 year old DD and 2 yr old DS on bunk beds that are not bunked. So they are just twin beds side by side. DD had a toddler bed for a bit and DS has a small rail (that comes with the bunk bed). Both are well.
I would not feel comfortable bunking the beds and having either one sleep on the top. Too dangerous IMO. DD can go up and down but I would fear she could fall in the middle of the night.
there are some fancy bunk beds with a stair case on the side vs a ladder and I would feel OK with that but those are pretty expensive IMO
Ikea has a bunk bed that has the bottom bunk on the floor and the top bunk not so high. those make me a bit more comfortable.
We saw a loft style bunk bed at Ashley furnitures website, the steps are solid and actually are also drawers! but even though it's only 3 steps up, I'm concerned not as much about DD falling out but DS climbing up and falling. We are looking into trundle beds. The loft bed I liked was over $1,000 and the trundle was about $585 (it had 3 drawers under the bed that pulled out, eliminating the need for a dresser and we'll be able to use a chest of drawers instead, maximizing the room space).

Oh yea...was not even thinking about putting her in the top bunk! Just wasn't sure if it would be strange for her making the transition...and also I would be worried about her getting up and trying to climb up to the top bunk. Thanks!

A trundle is also an option.
