So on the pedi's recommendation, we started Charlotte on cereal. But she hates it! Do you think spitting it all out means she's not ready, or she just doesn't like cereal? Not sure if I should keep torturing her with this or try some veggies.

It took awhile for Jackson to like it. She might still have the tongue thrust reflex, Jackson did when we first started (around 5 mo) It took him about a month before he really started liking it. Eating off of a spoon is a new experience for babies as well that can take some getting used to.
It took DD a while to eat it and she never liked rice cereal, she liked oatmeal much better. We made it with formula too, not water. We didn't push the issue, just tried once a day and if she ate it, great, if not, tried again the next day.
DS isn't a fan of cereal, either. We tried oatmeal as well and he doesn't like that either. I started mashing up a tiny bit of banana (literally like a 2 inch slice) and mixing it with a little cereal and breastmilk, and he will eat that. He's 5.5 months and he gets that once a day. I'm going to start veggies once he's 6 months.

Pretty much this, except we probably only do cereal 1x/week. Honestly, we are horrible about purees, and I had to laugh on the inside when (at W's 6 month appt) the pedi said that we should be up to 3 "meals"/day by 7 months. IMO, baby food (cereal included) is just for practice, anway.
There is a tongue thrust reflex, this is just one article I found.
"In the first four months the tongue thrust reflex protects the infant against choking. When any unusual substance is placed on the tongue, it automatically protrudes outward rather than back. Between four and six months this reflex gradually diminishes, giving the glob of cereal a fighting chance of making it from the tongue to the tummy."
I will say, from personal experience, that it does get better and better. I started my DD at 5 months with solids and she spit almost everything out until about 6 months. I waited until 6 months with DS and he spits a little out but has done MUCH better over all. So, you may just give her a chance to try it every day and just see what happens. Also, I started both of my kids with oatmeal because I have heard it tastes better and is less binding...if you know what I mean. Maybe she would do better with that.
Re: Cereal?
We tried it, didn't get a positve response, so we just stopped all together. Clearly he turned out okay.

GL.
So it's looks like practice and patience is the key. Thanks!
