Carys or Cerys?

I've done some reading up on the name Carys. How would you pronounce it? What do you think of it? I read that in Wales, it is considred a very old-fashioned name, similar to the English Ethel or Mildred. I also read that Carys and Cerys are pronounced differently. Carys sounds like KAH-ris, and Cerys is CARE-is. Is any of this relevant in North America? I prefer the CARE-is pronunciation. Should I then use the Cerys spelling? TIA.

I would pronounce them both Care-iss.  Catherine Zeta Jones daughter is named that and I think that's how they say it.

  • I would say Carys like kaa-ris and Cerys like sair-iss.  I think the Carys spelling has a better chance of getting the pronunciation you want, but neither is going to be a lsam dunk.  And no, how it's spelled or pronounced in Wales is not going to matter much in North America.

I think it's a pretty name, but your daughter is going to be spelling it and pronouncing it for people her whole life.

  • My daughter's name is Carys. I am welsh, so I prefer to pronounce it the way it is in Whales - CAH-riss. I get a lot of mispronunciations, but even more compliments.

  • The C followed by an E makes me want to pronounce is at an S, not as a C.

  • I've never seen it spelled Cerys.  Since it derives from the verb caru (to love), stick with Carys.

  • Thanks for all the input so far. If we use the name, I want to pronounce it CARE-iss, because my name is Chris. Chris and KAH-riss are way too close, imo. I just wanted to make sure if we spell it Carys and pronounce it CARE-iss, it's not going to be huge blunder.
  • I've only seen the Carys spelling and it's always pronounced CARE-is. I think it is pretty!

I knew a girl from Wales who spelled it Cays and we called her "CARE-is." I do think she once shared that the Welsh pronunciation could also be CAR-is.

My issue with Cerys is that the "e" makes me want to pronounce it like this: SAIR-is. A soft "c".  I feel like Carys pronounced CARE-is is fine.

  • I would pronounce Carys as CARE-ISS and Cerys as KER-ISS. Out of those two I would definitely choose the Carys spelling and sound! I prefer to spell it as Karis (still pronounced as Care-is) though...
