New-ish moms... questions about using Ergo with newborn

Hi all!

I didn't have an Ergo babycarrier with Emily (didn't even know about them!) but every friend I have who's had a child in the last 2+ years has used one with their child and continue to urge me to purchase one.

Has anyone used one with that newborn insert cushion and could you tell me your experience with it?  Recommend it?

I have a ring sling that I used with Emily that I have ready but it wasn't great to use after the first 4 months so, I need something that will carry me through.  :)

Thanks so much for any help!

Re: New-ish moms... questions about using Ergo with newborn

  • Olivia can't stand being confined in the ergo (with the heart to heart insert) but Jackson LOVES being in the ergo. (Even now at a whopping 29 lbs).

If the ring sling worked, I would use it until it's no longer appropriate and then consider an Ergo.  They go on really good sale on babysteals pretty frequently, I think.

  • I was able to use the Ergo with Chase- i didn't need/use the infant insert.

Chase was 6lbs 15oz when he was born. I started using the Ergo around 6 weeks and he did just fine nuzzled closely to my chest. A lot of moms just say you can roll up a receiving blanket and put it under their tushes and that is just the same- Chase didn't even need that. In the beginning they just kinda curl up against you in it.

Chase still love to be carried in the Ergo at almost 8 months and 21lbs.

Can't believe you are sooooo close! Exciting! How was Disney!?

  • I like the Ergo a lot, but DD and I both hated the insert.  I only used it two or three times, then gave up and just went without it.  Both of us would get incredibly hot and sweaty (July baby), and it was very uncomfortable.  Once she was really old enough to be without it, around 3-4 months, I LOVED the Ergo.  From about 4-6 months, DD would nap on me in it and it was very helpful, especially when we were out with friends and family.  Now that she is 9 months, I don't use it that often because she prefers to face forward, so we use the Bjorn.  I do, however, use the Ergo once in a while, even with my 2 year old, so to me, it's a great purchase.

  • I used the Ergo with Owen a lot but didnt buy the insert. I wish I had bought it because his face was almost covered completely by the top of the Ergo and I couldnt really use it without a towel rolled up under his butt for several months.

I got the Ergo and insert with my daughter, but didn't like it until she was about 4 months. It was akward and too hot to use in the summer in TX.
  • You will LOVE your ergo! I never used the infant insert, but I still carry DS in it (25 pounds) and he still loves it.

You can always use the sling until baby is a bit older. As a tiny newborn, DS liked the Moby but not the Beco which is what I had before the Ergo.

  • Thanks for this post....I've been wondering the same thing.  We have an ergo and while I loved how it felt on, DS hated it (but I didn't start wearing him in it until he was about 15 months).  I am hoping to get more use out of it this time around, but with it being 100 degrees here in August, I wondered how hot it would be.  I wonder if I should just get a moby or something else to use when she's little.
  • Hi all!

Things have been so crazy around here, I am just now sitting down to read all the replies.  Thank you so much for all the feedback, I truly appreciate it!

Thankfully, our summers here in SF are so mild, the "too sweaty for a summer baby" won't apply to us (but boy would it if we were back in TX!!!).  :)

While my mom was in town this past week, she purchased the new Organic Ergo with Infant insert for me, which was such a nice surprise.  I can't wait to use it and hope baby boy will love it.  If not, like most of you pointed out, I'll try my ring sling.

We DO have a name picked out but are still on the fence about two others so, we are going to keep calling him by the name we chose and see how it "fits" once he's born before announcing it.

And Disney was really awesome!  A bit too hot for this pregnant mama (LA had a heatwave the week we were there, awesome) but a fun time was had by all.  I actually finally got it all documented with pics up on my blog.

    Thanks again everyone!!!
