So, so over cleaning bottles.

How do y'all keep the rotation of bottles smoothly? Do you hand wash every bottle? I have been doing that, but I'm thinking about buying enough bottles to get me through every other day, so I can just put them in the dishwasher. The thought of hand washing bottles at least 3 times a day for the next 8-9 months is depressing me no end...

  • As of right now, we don't have a dishwasher, and nowhere to really put one in our shoebox of a kitchen. So I hand wash all her bottles and throw them in a big pot on the stove and boil them to sterilize. Plus we use Dr. Brown's bottles, so its even more frustrating to wash every piece. When I get home from work I wash whatever bottles she used at daycare along with the ones from the night before.

  • I send 4 to daycare each day, and bring 4 to work to pump into. So we're dirtying 8 per day.

I have more bottles than nipples. Sometimes I have to handwash nipples, but for the most part I am all set if I run the dishwasher every other day. I hate handwashing them.

    I'd buy more.

  • I have six bottles.  I wait for her to use all of them (about 24 hours), and then I wash/sterilize a batch.  Total process takes me about 10 minutes a day.

  • My mil has two bottles that she rotates throughout the day and then keeps them and washes them at night. She does wash them throughout the day also, but more of a quick rinse. I have a bazillion pumping bottles so I end up just rinsing them out and running them all through the dishwasher on the weekend.

  • We have 12 bottles. She uses 4 during the day and about 4-5 at night. I wash them every evening when I get home. But if I ever am super busy and don't get to it, I have enough to last me that night. I would like to buy another 4 more just in case.

And yes, washing bottles totally sucks sometimes. I hand wash mine even though I have a dishwasher. Honestly, my husband and I don't fill a dishwasher for 2-3 days so our bottles would sit there for a while before they got clean.

  • I have the Dr. Brown's bottles too, and they are SUPER annoying to clean. I just bought 3 more, so now I have 6, (he is eating 5oz, so I have to use the big ones).  I hand wash them, and then at night, will put whichever ones are left through the dishwasher. A friend gave me a ton of Playtex dropin bottles, and he takes them ok. I need to get 8oz liners, and then i'll use those as well.  Cleaning the dropins is a million times easier.

Dr. Brown's makes a microwave sterilizer, it might make your life a lot easier!! It does for me!

  • I use Dr. Brown bottles. I have 15. Gets me through 2 days but then if I don't keep up with washing them, it takes FOREVER to wash them all. I just said the other day I think I might try out some regular bottles.

  • I used to wash them every night after DS went to bed and then we bought a few more so that we had enough to get through to the next dishwash. I have 9 small bottles and right now I mostly BF and only use a bottle when I am out of the house. I rinse them out and they just sit on the sink until we do a dishwash about every 2-4days. Once we move to the larger bottles, we have 12.

Our dishwasher used to be totally packed on top constantly with the bottles and breast pump parts. Now that we are on formula (major allergies) the pump parts are history and now that I'm back at work, we only use 3 or 4 bottles per day during the week so I use the dishwasher.  Sometimes it's not full on bottom and I feel guilty about the environment.  I have to handwash the nipples, though, every other day.  They do not get clean otherwise.  I make a little bit of hot soapy water in a mug to clean them (nuke the water because it takes 10 years for hot water to come out in the kitchen) and then run them through the sterilizer.  I rinse everything well first before it sits.  Formula is so munch gunkier than BM.  :-P

  • I also use Dr. Brown's.  DD uses 3 a day at daycare.  When I get home, I soak all bottles and breastpump accessories in hot soapy water.  After my kids fall asleep, about 2-3 hours later, I start washing everything.  It's easier to clean the Dr. Brown bottles and breastpump accessories when they've been soaking in the soapy water.  There's not a lot of elbow grease going into it.  To make my life easier, I bought another set of Dr. Brown and storage bottles so that I wouldn't have to wait for them to dry before I could start packing up our supplies for the next day.  When I come home the next night, I can wash and pack at the same time without having to push my bedtime any later than it already is.  Half of my kitchen is just baby bottles!  But it's all worth it. =)
