I didn't start using cloth till my third baby was 5 months old. If you have cloth diapered a newborn, what would you suggest? We prefer pockets or AIO's. Do OS diapers work for a newborn, or would you suggest getting the extra small diapers by BG or FB (two of our favorite brands)? Any other suggestions?

Re: If you cloth diapered a newborn
One size won't fit a newborn. They usually start working somewhere above 10 lb.
We've got a few Mum's Bums small AIO; they're great but they also seem hard to find. I like them because they've got the flip-out inners that dry fast.
Other than that, we're using prefolds with bummi's super whisper wraps. I like them because you can effectively "stuff" the cover with the prefold and have it ready to go, no snappi needed. Downside is he gets poo on the cover a LOT, so the covers don't last long.
Last thing we're doing a lot during the day is GMD infant fitteds with Thirsties Duos snap covers. I don't like the snaps at night - too fiddly. If I had velcro, I could just use these all the time. I got the fitteds used for about $2 each, so we've got tons of 'em.

OS diapers were still too big for my 11 pound newborn, so I'm guessing no!
We mostly fitteds and only have a few BGs. I love Kissaluv's newborn fitteds. Size 0. They were really the best option for us and I'm so glad we found them before just buying more BGs.
Oh, check out this thread:

I CD'd DD as a newborn and am CDing DS right now...he's 4 weeks old today.
We used a variety of newborn sized diapers. But we LOVE the BG xs AIO's. We also have a few KLO's which are nice and I have a bunch of the GMD newborn workhorse diapers which are great, especially for the cost. I do have one old style xs FB and it is a good diaper too, bigger than the xs BG's so it will last us longer.
Oh, we also have 2 Lil Joey AIO's. They are really nice, but oh so teeny tiny, so if you anticipate a bigger baby, I'd skip them. DS was 7 lb 15 oz at birth and 7 lb 5 oz when we brought him home and started using the CD's. He's probably around 9 lbs now and I imagine he won't be wearing the Lil Joey's much longer...maybe another week or 2.
I agree with PPs. One-size don't usually fit a newborn. They have to chunk up a bit.
We used prefolds and covers for DD and they worked great. You could do fitteds with covers if you don't like to pin or snappi. For AIOs you can check out the grovia newborn AIOs.. I haven't used them yet, but they seem like a good product. I think the BG xs might fit a NB, but I don't have experience with those either.
We use GMD pfs w snappis and a mix of covers and have NEVER had a leak or poo on the covers. LO 41/2 weeks and we've cd since day one. He's fitting in yellow edge now.
ETA- We had 4 little Joeys that I consider worthless. And my baby is average size- 7#11 at birth. The AIOs that we love and that still fit well, no leaks, are the Tots Bots Tiny Fits. Love them and will get more for future kids.
Our covers were proraps and bummis and thirsties. I like the cutout for the umbilical cord of the proraps. Plus, they are cheap. Which is nice because newborn EBF poo got on the cover a lot.
We also had some KL0s which we liked. If you are interested in fitteds, I'd also recommend Crickett's Diapers. We didn't get one until he was a few months old. But I love them. And they are on clearance. And we are still using their newborn size.
OS diapers likely won't work.
We used sized Thirsties pockets, KL0s, and prefolds.
I have PF's, FB XS's, Thirsties Fab Fitteds, Thirsties Pockets, WAHM fitteds, Kissa Contours, and BeccaBottom AIO's (really they're more like AI2's).
GMD Orange PF's- hate snappi'ing but work perfectly fine for us tri-folded in a Bummis/Imsy Vimse xs cover. They're the only thing that is absorbent enough to go more than an hour as is. I still use/like them tri-folded. Also, I love having them around for various other uses- leak guard while changing diapers, naked time, etc.... Also, now that she's getting big enough to start using some of her size S diapers, they make great inserts!
FB XS's- my DD was born just under 7lbs and was down to 6.5lbs at her lowest and the FB's didn't start fitting her skinny minny legs until she chunked up to about 8lbs. The wings don't have cross over snaps so I couldn't get them tight enough around the legs early on. They fit great now, however. But at almost 10lbs and 6 weeks she soaks the MF insert in an hour so I add a doubler (cut up a Sham-wow MF cloth into strips and fold it up to put in the pocket)
Thirsties Fab Fitteds/WAHM fitteds/KissaContours- loved them at first, but as of 3ish weeks she soaked them in about a half hour and we'd get leaks and she'd get rashy from the moisture if we didn't change quick enough.
Thirsties Pockets- always leaked out of them, could never figure out why.
BeccaBottom AIO's- LOVE them, definitely my favorite diaper. They have micro-fleece or suedecloth for the stay dry feeling but had hemp as the absorbent layer. The soaker snaps in/out for quicker drying and they're easier than the pockets to put back together after the laundry. The front snapping style has cross over snaps and the side-snapping style has 4 snap settings so we're able to get the perfect fit as she as grown and chunked up in the legs and both styles have a snap down option for the umbilical cord. The only downer- at about 4 weeks she started getting compression leaks if I had her in her ergo/car seat and the diaper was more than an 1.5 hrs old. But again, a Sham-wow doubler fixed that problem. I got mine used on spots but I see that her store is active again on hyenacart.

My LO has outgrown these at 7 weeks - about 9 lbs. I really liked them.
