Clothing Size Help

Hello! Charlie's starting to grow out of his 12M clothes and I was wondering how the sizes work for the bigger babies. He has a few items in 18M, but where does it go from there? Is it 24M then 2T or are 24M and 2T the same? His bday is coming up and people are asking me what size he needs. :)

Re: Clothing Size Help

  • I think 2T (sometimes) tend to be slightly bigger.  Thomas is almost 14 months and he is starting to wear 2T clothes.

  • Ditto - I thought 2T was slightly bigger than 24 months too......
  • I'm really starting to see a wide descrepancy in sizes between brands now.   Some 24m stuff is still way too big for Charles' little butt/waist.  Literally falls off of him.   But then there's other stuff that fits him just fine.   So I'm finding it's a real crap-shoot.

I bought some 24m stuff at Kohl's (Jumping Bean brand) and the shorts literally fell off of him.   Walmart's Garanimals are the same way.. they seem to run big in the waist so I'm still having to get him 18mo. stuff.

I haven't seen a whole lot of difference in 24 mo vs 2T.. just slightly bigger.

  • There IS a difference between 24 month and 2T -- see sizing below:

    Baby Gap/Old Navy

    12-18 mos
    22-27 lbs
    29"-31"
    18-24 mos
    27-30 lbs
    31"-33"
    2 yrs
    30-33 lbs
    33"-36"
    3 yrs
    33-36 lbs
    36"-39"

    Carter's

    12-18 mos
    24.5-27.5 lbs
    30.5"-32.5"
    18-24 mos
    27.5-30 lbs
    32.5"-34"
    2T
    29-31 lbs
    34.5"-36.5"
    3T
    31-34 lbs
    36.5"-38.5"

Aaron wore 18 month clothing at 12 months and 24 month clothing by about 17 months.  Now, at almost 21 months, he's pretty much a 2T--though the length is very long in most pants. But 24 month clothing (unless a particular article of clothing ran big) is too short/tight now.

I find that Old Navy runs slightly smaller than Baby Gap--possibly due to the less expensive clothing that is possibly made from "cheaper" fabric. I also find that Carter's runs big.

  • Thanks all! The 12 month are "just about right" in fit right now although the pants are a little long and tops a little tight in the body. I think Charlie has a long body and short legs, LOL. He is about 26 lbs and 33 inches long.

I wonder if this is a trait for all babies/toddlers? If so, I hope they outgrow it. Because Aaron also has a long body and short legs.

  • 18 months, then either 2T or 24 months.  I found that 2Ts ran slimmer for my skinny boy.
  • Generally 12-18, 18, 18-24 and then 2T. It was my understanding that the difference between 2T and 24 month is that the 2T is a bit longer and less bulky. 24 month clothes still have a lot of room for diapers.

Mikey was tall and chubby as an infant and wore 12 or 18 month sizes from the time he was 6 months. I've been getting him 18 month, 24 month and 2T  since he turned 1 - it just depends on what brand it is. Now that he's thinned out, but still tall, I tend to get him just 2T stuff. Pants tend to run big and shirts expose his tummy, but he swims in bigger stuff.

Not necessarily.  Charlie is built just like me... all legs!  Freakishly long legs.   He also has absolutely no azzz.. just like his Daddy.

  • Well, I still HOPE Aaron outgrows the short legs (like my dad) because both DH and I also have freakishly long legs. lol

  • 2T seems to be longer than 24M especially in the pants. Otherwise, you have the right idea about sizing. It took me a while to figure out too - it isn't exactly intuitive!

  • Ok then where does 1T fall in the mix?  I have one pair of overalls that are 1T.

Oh, and Michael has freakeshly long legs and arms like his mama.

  • I would get 18M for summer and 18-24 or 24M for winter/spring (different brands label them differently). Some 24M and 2T are the same but other brands make 2Ts slightly wider and taller. So I would stay away from 2T for now.

Adrian is wearing 2T and they're a tiny bit big on him. He's 20 months, 30+ lbs and over 35" tall. His growth slowed down after about 18 months though, so those 3Ts I bought for summer are huge on him. I think he'll be in 2T through the winter at least.

Sarah is the opposite, she has really long legs and a short torso. Most pants are too wide for her but too short in the legs.
