Spinoff of Gas Price Post

Has the increase in gas prices made you change any of your driving habits?  My DH and I just had a conversation last night about getting bikes to ride to work but that's not feasible for me.  My oldest is in college and drives so we are putting gas in 3 vehicles. Luckily, finals were this week so she won't be commuting again til the fall.

I read somewhere that $3.50 per gallon was the cut off where many Americans would change there driving habits.

We are looking at closer places to home to camp this summer since we only get about 9 mpg pulling our travel trailer.

Gas is $3.73 here.

Re: Spinoff of Gas Price Post

  • Gas here in my area of CT is $4.33.

I definitely think about where I am going and how to combine errands if I am in the same area.  I am a SAHM, but my husband has a 20 minute commute.  He has been taking the Civic instead of the SUV to save gas.  (he used to not like the Civic, but now with the price of gas, he does!)

  • Not really. Most days my DH works out of our house. And my office is only 10 min from home (school is smack in the middle of home/work). I have to still use my Highlander instead of DH Jetta because 2 car seats do not fit comfortably in his car.

But generally I only have to fill up about every 2 weeks. Runs me between $60-70 right now.

  • We are a family of two drivers and three vehicles (not counting the non-functioning motorcycle that takes up space in our tiny garage!)

Once winter is FINALLY gone, I may park our Honda Pilot for the summer and put Charlie's carseat into our Accord since it gets much better mileage.

Hubby drives it and my POS 94 Toyota Paseo interchangeably to work every day since they both get pretty good mileage compared to the SUV.  That means he'll only have the POS car to drive.    But we've also been forever talking about selling off the Paseo, since the insurance probably costs more than the thing is worth.

  • I drive 60 miles round trip to work and have a Dodge Grand Caravan.  We do so much traveling and camping that having a smaller car just does not work.  Tim drives a Ford Ranger pick up and has a 24 mile round trip to work.  I love living in rural areas, I hate the commute with rural areas/

  • I guess sime small adjustments like trying to fit all my store runs in while i'm out already, but nothing drastic. I drive a Honda Civic good gas mileage. I drive about 20 minutes to work. I love to drive though.
  • I watch how much I drive, and combine trips when I'm able if it's not in town. We live 13 miles to the next town where all the bigger stores are (Walmart, groceries, Costco, etc.) and we have to get all our stuff there. It's too expensive at the mom and pop and they don't carry everything anyway.

We are moving to that town soon, mostly for a bigger house, but the daily trips played a big factor (to a savings for those trips alone of more than $6000/yr), and so did driving time. It will also save a huge commute too, both DH and I work in the closest city, which is a 60 mile round trip everyday in seperate cars. If our offices were closer, and our start times nearer to the same, I'd consider carpooling. The move means we'll have about a 24 mile round trip.

DH has a Mini Cooper S, and it does very well on gas, but even he's looking at something that would squeak out that little bit more. I have a Caravan, and we really do need a bigger vehicle for all that we do. It's impossible to take more than quick trips and expect that the van will hold much more than the passengers. We went from looking at Suburbans and Yukon XL's to Dodge (Mercedes) Sprinter deisels. I think we are sold on the Sprinter.

  • We hardly drive as it is. Walking is so easy here and public transportation is good - we're lucky.

Gas is 3.99 here. I drive a Toyota Highlander which SUCKS gas, so we are trying to drive DH's Nissan.  We do try to run all of our errands together, and not go out for one thing.  WAlking up the street to go to CVS for milk would have never crossed my mind because it was so expensive, but is a good option now.
