HELP, only sleeps in swing!!

L will not go down for the night in anything but her swing.  She naps in it during the day too(1-5hrs).  I have started making her nap in the bouncer, but she will only give me about 20-45 minutes usually.  She wakes up any time between 930-1245 after going to bed at 7 or 8.  I then just nurse her to sleep and she sleeps about 6-7 hours in the RNP.

I tried to put her down in the RNP tonight..MELTDOWN city.  After about 10 minutes I just brought her out to the living room to her swing.  She started smiling and talking up a storm for another half hour happy as could be.  She is sleeping now and always falls asleep on her own, but with music and motion of course.

It is just all over frustrating b/c she eats lasts at 5:30 and takes until 6:30-8 to fall asleep. Which means she wakes up to eat again as soon as 9:30 some nights.  My whole evening revolves around this routine b/c the swing is in the living room.

What can I do?  She knows what she wants clearly....she was crying tears and all in the RNP.  I put her in the swing and she was all smiles and talking.

I think this may be hard to break........

Re: HELP, only sleeps in swing!!

  • I would try giving LO a bath and then rocking her untill she is either out or almost out then set her in her RNP if thats where you want her to sleep. The bath always seems to help when Jay is having a melt down.

  • I have a similar issue. My little guy will only sleep in his bassinette/crib for a little bit before waking, but he'll sleep in bed with me for 6 hours! I want to break this habit but don't know how. He was a preemie and therefore has trouble self-soothing.

  • She hates being rocked to sleep.  She literally fights sleep and cries the whole time.  She loves to look at you and talk when I hold her and is fine when I nurse her.  However, if I hold her a lot longer than that she freaks.  She hates the sling.  She unfortunately isn't big on cuddling:(

  • Can you put the swing in the nursery?  A friend of mine kept trying to get LO into the crib (from the swing).  She started around 4 months.  Around 5.5 months she randomly tried, it worked and her LO started STTN for the first time ever!?  I wouldn't worry about it too much.  Just start a bedtime routine and stick to it.  Maybe try putting the swing in the nursery and letting LO sleep there until ready for the crib!?

  • I haven't had this issue, but my only advice is when you decide to switch - go cold turkey and don't go back and forth.  We transitioned from sleeping in a car seat to sleeping in the crib. We started with naps and when we switched to nights we never put him back in the car seat.  However, we didn't have a big issue with the switch.  I honestly don't know what we would have done if LO had given us a big problem. I wish you luck!
  • DS still naps in the swing, but will sleep in his PNP at night no problem...

...now. As a little-bitty guy he'd only sleep on us or in the swing, and even now it's the only way to get him down for a nap when he doesn't want to. We were given a rocking cradle that we use(d) in conjunction with a sleep sheep, and had to rock him to sleep in that for a month before he was finally ably to sleep in it without being rocked the whole time. Then it was rocking while getting him to sleep. Now he'll sleep in the PNP. -Of course, he needs to be pat on the back and the sleep sheep, but I think the consistency of the sheep being turned on every time we put him in there helps. (I now rock him to sleep in the rocking chair after his last bottle, then move him to the PNP when he's out.)
