Take a Pay Cut?

How much of a pay cut would you take to go from a really stressful job to a much less stressful one??

Re: Take a Pay Cut?

  • To me it would depend if I could afford it or not.  If it was okay for my family financially, I would take any amount of pay cut to be in a less stressful job.

  • Can you negotiate keeping your pay to within 10%? That's what I would try to aim for.

I agree with this. I'm the primary income in our household so it would be really hard for me to take a pay cut.

  • It would depend on more than the pay cut, are their any extra perks besides less stress, like shorter commute, better hours, better insurance. I also am the main provider in our house, so it would be hard for me to take a pay cut, but DH is the one with insurance, so he couldn't leave either, we are both pretty much stuck! Good luck to you!

  • I had to take a 5% pay cut while keeping the same miserable job.  It was to avoid layoffs.  Although I didn't like the job the  5% wasn't that bad.

This...to a "T"!  I have the same situation.  I keep asking DH to ask for a raise, so I can get a less stressful job.  Hey, is that an option for you?  Can DH make up the difference so you won't feel it financially?

Depends how much stress you are dealing with in your current job and what your financial situation is.  Also, for me it would depend on how much upward mobility there would be at the new job - maybe you'll start at one level, but have more of an opportunity to move to levels of increasing responsibility (with commesurate pay increase)?  That could potentially make up for the initial pay cut.

All these things aside, if I were miserable at my job and had another job offer, I would take it.  Good luck!

  • Within reason, I would be willing to take a hit financially in order to have less stress. My job right now is so crazy- we have really struggled with what I am going to do when we have a child. Because of my visa situation I have to work, and really I do love my job, but honestly, life's not worth all the stress. There are definitely higher priorities.

I just recently did this, and I could not be happier.  I'm like a different person since dropping to P/T at my high-stress job.  You have to figure out what the line is though, because too large a pay cut could start causing personal financial stress, which doesn't put you in any better a position.  Its all about balance!

I had to make that decision about 5 years ago -- I ended up taking a 40% pay cut to get a job that didn't require me to work 60-70 hours a week --  fortunately, at the same time I made that choice, DH was moving up in his company so his increases helped offset some of the loss.  It was tough giving up the extra disposable income, but it was worth it for my mental health.

  • Thanks, ladies!  If we weren't going through so much $$$ ttc, I wouldn't think twice.  My husband is supportive so I think we can make it work.  I can't imagine going to work and not dealing with crisis after drama after crisis.  Sounds like a dream...
