1st Trimester

Round ligament pain this early?

Is anyone dealing with sharp pain in your lower abdomen when you sneeze or cough? I've read up on it and it sounds like round ligament pain, but I've also read that it doesn't usually show up until the 2nd trimester.

There's also pretty chronic aching in the same region. It's not a stabbing feeling, just a dull ache.

Guess I'll be the worry-wart pregnant lady calling her ob tomorrow...

Re: Round ligament pain this early?

  • For me, round ligament pain was similar to a sideache. I don't remember how early I had it in prior pregnancies.

  • I have definitely had round ligament pain from very early on. I get it more when changing positions too quickly, it is SO painful it makes me double over. But it has happened when I cough/sneeze too. I had it from probably about 4 or 5 weeks up until today.

  • I've had it a couple times, really sharp pain when I suddenly stand up or twist around too sharply.

  • ha I just posted after you did about this dull achy side thing. This is my second pregnancy and I did not experience this dull achy side thing the last time. I did have round ligament pain the last time and this does not feel the same. Round ligament pain is more crampy feeling and this is not. I am confused too and hoping maybe its a corpus luteum cyst? which is not a bad thing...

I also called my doctor and they said it was round ligament pain. i guess they don't understand how i feel. also this seems so early to have r.l.p. and it is up by my left hip, where is yours? keep us posted on what your ob says please!

  • oops sorry i see you said lower abdomen for your pain. and if it is sharp and quick then goes away, it does sound like round ligament pain. but the achy feeling is more what i'm having and not sure what it is. GL to you!

  • I've been having the exact same pains as you are describing since I was 4.5 weeks.... It comes and goes through the day, and seems worse if I change positions too quickly. I told my doctor about it and he said that it is normal and not to worry!

  • I am a couple weeks later than you, and even though it's my second pregnancy I felt the first twinge of round ligament pain yesterday, so YES it's totally possible!  And really freaked me out in my first pregnancy until I found out what it was!

  • With this pregnancy RLP started before I knew I was pregnant.  That was one sign I had that lead me to believe I was before testing.  I get it when I move to quick in bed, cough, laugh hard or get up to quick from a low chair.  Last pregnancy I had it early as well and lasted almost all pregnancy.

  • If it is sharp and crampy feeling, its round ligament pain. you are far enough along that things are getting moved around in there and there is pressure.

Last pregnancy it didn't start until a little later (then it lasted the whole time), but this time I was feeling it by 6 weeks.

  • I called my doctor this morning and she said as long as the sharp pains aren't constant and there isn't any bleeding then it's probably just round ligament pain. I explained in detail exactly what I was feeling and she said it's just my body stretching. I'm going to take her word for it.

    BUT

I still am a little nervous...
